The Sangti valley opens out about 15 km from Dirang, reached by a 10 km side road from the highway near Dirang Dzong. The Sangti river runs shallow and clear over stones, and the valley floor is a patchwork of fields, small orchards and grazing land, with pine slopes rising on both sides. Sangti village has a few hundred residents, mostly Monpa Buddhist families.

Ask your taxi to drop you at the head of the valley and walk back along the river for two or three hours. You pass fields of maize and vegetables, prayer flags strung over the water, and wooden houses with stacked firewood. Locals run a few simple campsites by the river in season, and a sheep farm lies about 7 km from Dirang on the way in. October and November bring golden fields and crisp light.

Carry water and snacks, as shops are few. Keep to paths along field edges and do not walk through planted crops. If you visit the village gompa, walk clockwise and leave a small offering if you wish. Winter is beautiful but cold in the shade. Sangti makes a fine slow day for anyone spending two or more nights in Dirang.
