A private car changes the Tawang trip. You can stop at Sela for the lake and the views, take the old road over the pass when it is open, visit Nuranang Falls at Jang, and leave early or late as the weather suggests. We break the long drive from Guwahati at Bhalukpong, then climb to Dirang for two nights before Tawang, which makes the altitude easier on everyone.

Stays are the best of the mid-range: riverside cottages in Dirang, an established town hotel in Tawang with heaters and monastery views, and a central hotel in Bomdila. The first night at Bhalukpong is simpler, in the best available lodge near the river. Drivers on this route are experienced, but roads are mountain roads; expect long days on days 1, 2 and 7.

Highlights

  • The Kameng river and Inner Line gate at Bhalukpong
  • Two nights in riverside cottages in the Dirang valley
  • Time at Sela Lake and the Jaswantgarh memorial
  • Tawang Monastery and Urgelling, birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama
  • A full day to the high lakes above 4,000 m

Cross the check gate early and stop at the Orchid Research Centre at Tipi, 5 km up the road. The road climbs through Tenga's valley to Bomdila at about 2,400 m, then drops to the warmer Dirang valley. Keep an eye out for roadside stalls selling oranges and kiwis in season.

Night: Dirang1,620 m≈ 40 km localMeals: Breakfast, dinner

A slow day at about 1,600 m to acclimatise. Visit Dirang Dzong, the stone village with its old fortified houses, and the hot springs by the river. Your driver knows the valley well and can suggest a quiet riverside spot for tea.

Over Sela Pass to Tawang

Night: Tawang4,170 m≈ 140 km · 6–7 h with stopsMeals: Breakfast, dinner

Leave by 7 am. The road climbs through Baisakhi to Sela Pass at about 4,170 m. When the old road is open your driver takes it for Sela Lake and the prayer-flag gate; keep the stop to 30–45 minutes. Descend to the Jaswantgarh war memorial and Nuranang Falls near Jang, then on to Tawang. Rest on arrival, drink water and avoid alcohol tonight.

About Sela Pass

Tawang Monastery and Urgelling

Begin with morning prayers at Tawang Monastery, then visit the museum and library. After lunch, drive to Urgelling, the small temple where the 6th Dalai Lama was born in 1683, and to Ani Gompa, a nunnery on the hillside, if open. End the day at the Tawang War Memorial at sunset. Dress modestly for the monastery, walk clockwise around shrines and ask before photographing monks or the prayer hall. The museum has a small entry fee and sometimes a camera charge. Evenings in Tawang are cold, so have dinner early and keep warm.

6Day

The high lakes

Night: Tawang2,669 m≈ 80–100 km round trip · full dayMeals: Breakfast, dinner

A full day in your own car to the lakes above Tawang: Pangang Teng Tso and, if the road and Army rules allow, Sangetsar beyond. About Tawang
7Day

Tawang to Bomdila

Night: Bomdila2,415 m≈ 180 km · 6–7 hMeals: Breakfast, dinner

Drive back over Sela or through the tunnel and past Dirang to Bomdila. In the late afternoon, visit Bomdila Monastery above the town and walk through the market for Monpa carpets and woollens. Overnight at a central hotel on the highway, ready for an early start. Your driver times the crossing of Sela for the clearest part of the morning. If the weather is good, take a last short stop at the lake. Bomdila is cold at night from November to March, so ask for a heater if your room does not have one.

About Bomdila
8Day

Questions

About this trip

Why start with a night at Bhalukpong?

Guwahati to Dirang is about 320 km and 9–10 hours, too long for a comfortable first day. A night at Bhalukpong splits the drive and lets you reach Dirang in good time on day 2. If you fly into Tezpur early, we can skip it and go straight to Dirang.

What does ₹54,000 per person include?

Seven nights in good hotels with breakfast and dinner, a private SUV and driver for the whole trip, sightseeing as planned and the e-ILP fee, for two people sharing. Flights, lunches, monastery fees and Bum La are extra. Prices rise in October and May.

Is this trip good for families with children?

Yes. A private car means you control the pace and stops, and the hotels are comfortable. Children may feel the altitude at Sela and the lakes, so keep stops short and watch for headaches. Bring motion-sickness remedies.

Is it suitable for seniors?

Yes, for seniors in reasonable health who can manage long drives. Sela and the lakes are above 4,000 m, so talk to your doctor before the trip, and skip the lakes day if anyone feels unwell in Tawang.

Can we visit Bum La?

Bum La needs extra permission from authorities in Tawang and a dedicated vehicle, and is not always open to visitors. We can apply on your behalf on arrival. Check current status before you travel.

When is the best time for this trip?

March to May and October to November for clear skies and comfortable temperatures. December to February is good for snow at Sela and Tawang, with very cold nights. Avoid June to August for landslides and cloud.

Can we do the trip in fewer days?

Six nights is possible by dropping Bomdila and driving Tawang to Bhalukpong or Tezpur in one long day, but we do not recommend fewer than two nights in Dirang and three in Tawang.

Are the hotels heated?

Tawang and Bomdila hotels have heaters in rooms; Dirang cottages are warm but ask about heaters in midwinter. Power cuts happen, so carry thermals.

Is there mobile network on the route?

4G works in Bomdila, Dirang and Tawang town, with gaps on the road and none at the high lakes. Download maps and tell family when you will be offline.
