This is the Tawang trip most Indian travellers can afford, and it works well if you are happy on shared transport. From Tezpur, a Sumo climbs past the Bhalukpong check gate and Bomdila to Dirang, where we stay two nights in a Monpa homestay. The second night matters: it lets your body adjust before Sela Pass at about 4,170 m and Tawang at about 2,670 m.

Sumos do not stop for sightseeing, so on the Dirang–Tawang day you will see Sela from the window or during a short tea stop. In Tawang, we join other travellers from the homestay to share a taxi for the high lakes, which keeps the cost down. Rooms are simple and nights are cold; bathrooms are sometimes shared and hot water may come by the bucket.

Highlights

  • Two nights in a Monpa homestay in the Dirang valley
  • Crossing Sela at about 4,170 m on the road to Tawang
  • Morning prayers at Tawang Monastery, founded in 1680–81
  • A shared-taxi day to the high lakes beyond Tawang
  • Bomdila's monastery and market on the way down

About Dirang
2Day

Dirang Dzong and the hot springs

Night: Dirang1,620 mLocal, on foot or shared jeepMeals: Breakfast, dinner

A slow day to acclimatise at about 1,600 m. Walk or take a local jeep to Dirang Dzong, the old stone village with its fortified houses, then to the hot springs by the river. In the afternoon, walk along the valley through kiwi and apple orchards, or visit the yak research centre if it is open to visitors. Book your Sumo seat to Tawang for the next morning.

About Dirang
3Day

Over Sela to Tawang

Night: Tawang4,170 m≈ 140 km · 5–6 hMeals: Breakfast, dinner

The Tawang Sumo leaves Dirang early. The road climbs through Baisakhi to Sela, where most Sumos now use the tunnel, opened in 2024, though some stop for tea near the pass. Watch for the frozen lake in winter. Beyond, the road descends past Jaswantgarh and Jang to Tawang. Seats cost about ₹500–800. Take it easy on arrival, drink water and avoid alcohol tonight.

Walk up to Tawang Monastery for morning prayers, when monks chant in the assembly hall and butter lamps burn. Visit the museum and library, where gold-lettered scriptures are kept. About Tawang
5Day

The high lakes by shared taxi

Night: Tawang2,669 m≈ 80–100 km round trip · full dayMeals: Breakfast, dinner

Share a reserved taxi with other travellers to the high lakes beyond Tawang; a vehicle costs about ₹5,500–8,000 for the day, split between all passengers. The road climbs above 4,000 m to Pangang Teng Tso and on towards Sangetsar, often called Madhuri Lake. Access depends on weather, permits and Army rules, so the itinerary is set on the day. Carry warm layers, water and snacks.

In the late afternoon, walk up to Bomdila Monastery above town and through the market, where Monpa carpets and woollens are sold. Bomdila is cold at night, so check your room has enough blankets. Questions

About this trip

Is ₹18,500 per person realistic for 6 nights in Tawang?

Yes, for twin sharing with homestays, shared Sumos and a shared taxi for the lakes, outside peak October and May dates. It covers rooms with dinner and breakfast, transport and the e-ILP. Add travel to Tezpur, lunches of ₹150–300 a day and any monastery fees.

Can I do the Tawang trip by public transport?

Yes. Shared Sumos link Tezpur and Guwahati with Bomdila, Dirang and Tawang daily, and APSTS buses run on some days. Book seats the evening before. The only day you need a reserved vehicle is the high lakes trip, which you can share with other travellers.

Will I see Sela Pass from a shared Sumo?

You will pass through or under it. Since the tunnel opened in 2024, many Sumos use it and may not stop at the lake. If you want time at Sela, consider a shared taxi for that leg or visit on the high lakes day.

Do I need a permit for this trip?

Yes. Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit listing West Kameng and Tawang districts, usually applied for online. Foreigners need a Protected Area Permit through a registered operator. Check current status before you travel.

Is this trip possible in winter?

Yes, from December to February, with snow at Sela and freezing nights in Tawang. Roads usually stay open thanks to the tunnel, but delays happen. Bring proper winter clothing and check heating in your rooms.

Will I get altitude sickness?

Some people get headaches at Sela and the high lakes, above 4,000 m. Sleeping in Dirang at about 1,600 m before Tawang helps. Drink water, rest on arrival and go down if symptoms get worse.

Is this trip safe for solo women?

Yes, many solo women travel this route by Sumo and stay in homestays. Book the front seat where possible, reach your stay before dark and share your plans with your host.

Can I add Bum La to this trip?

Bum La needs extra permission from the authorities in Tawang and a reserved vehicle, and access is not always granted. If you want it, add a day and ask your homestay host to help with the process.

What should I pack?

Warm layers including a down jacket, thermals, gloves and a hat for Tawang; a rain jacket; motion-sickness remedies for the winding roads; a power bank and headtorch; printouts of your permit and ID; and cash, as cards are not accepted everywhere.
