This is the Tawang trip without the rush. We split eight nights between the orchards of Dirang and the hills of Tawang, so no day has more than one long drive and the climb to about 4,170 m at Sela comes after two easy nights at about 1,600 m. A private guide travels with you throughout, explaining Monpa history, Buddhist practice and the war history of the road.

Rungkhung Village Resort, part of Summit Hotels' Signature Collection, sits among kiwi and orange orchards above the Dirang river. Vivanta Tawang, a Taj-group hotel opened in December 2023, has heated rooms and mountain views a short drive from the monastery. Four nights in Tawang allow a full monastery day, a lakes day, a day for Urgelling and the paper and carpet workshops, and a spare day for weather.

Highlights

  • Four nights at Vivanta Tawang, the most comfortable hotel in Arunachal
  • Four nights among the orchards at Rungkhung Village Resort
  • Morning prayers and the gold-lettered library at Tawang Monastery
  • The high lakes and Sela with time to stop
  • Mon shugu paper and Monpa carpets made by hand

About Sela Pass
4Day

A day at Tawang Monastery

Night: Tawang2,669 m≈ 10 km localMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Go early for morning prayers in the assembly hall of Tawang Monastery, founded in 1680–81. Your guide explains the murals, the giant Buddha image and the monastic routine. Visit the museum and the library, where handwritten scriptures lettered in gold are kept. After lunch, rest at the hotel, then visit the Tawang War Memorial at sunset. Dress modestly, walk clockwise around shrines, and follow your guide's advice on photography.

About Tawang
5Day

The high lakes

Night: Tawang2,669 m≈ 80–100 km round trip · full dayMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A full day above 4,000 m. Drive through yak pastures to Pangang Teng Tso and, where the road and Army rules allow, to Sangetsar beyond. Your guide carries hot drinks and a packed lunch. If you have obtained extra permission for Bum La, it can be visited today. Return to the hotel by late afternoon. Your driver and guide will turn back if snow or ice makes the road unsafe; the next day is kept free as a buffer for exactly this reason.

About Tawang
6Day

Urgelling, Ani Gompa and Monpa crafts

Night: Tawang2,669 m≈ 25 km localMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Visit Urgelling, the temple where the 6th Dalai Lama was born in 1683, and Ani Gompa, a nunnery on a ridge above town, if open. In the afternoon, see Mon shugu paper being made from the bark of a local shrub, and visit a carpet workshop. The afternoon is free for the market or rest. This day doubles as a buffer if weather disrupts the lakes day.

About Tawang
7Day

Back to Dirang

Night: Dirang1,620 m≈ 140 km · 5–6 hMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A relaxed morning, then drive back over Sela or through the tunnel to Dirang. If the morning is clear, stop again at Sela for photographs. Settle in at Rungkhung Village Resort for two final nights. On the way, your guide can arrange a stop at a Monpa village near Jang or Senge for tea with a family, if one is willing to host. Arrive at the resort by mid-afternoon with time to walk in the orchards before dinner. Tonight is a good night for a long, slow meal after the cold of Tawang.

About Dirang
8Day

A free day in the valley

Night: Dirang1,620 mOptionalMeals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

A day to slow down. Walk in the orchards, visit the yak research centre if it is open to visitors, or take a gentle hike with your guide to a village above the valley. Birders can go out early with a local bird guide. Farewell dinner at the resort. If you prefer to rest, the resort's terraces and gardens make a quiet place to read with the valley below. In spring the orchards blossom and in autumn kiwis and oranges ripen on the slopes.

About Dirang

Questions

About this trip

Why is this trip ₹1,60,000 per person?

It uses the two best hotels in western Arunachal for all eight nights, includes all meals, a private SUV and a private guide for nine days, and all fees. Prices are indicative for 2026, for two sharing; peak dates and larger rooms cost more.

Is Vivanta Tawang really the best hotel in Arunachal?

It is the most comfortable we know: a Taj-group property opened in December 2023, with heated rooms and full hotel service. Nothing else in Tawang offers the same level of comfort.

Can honeymooners do this trip?

Yes. It is unhurried, the hotels are the best in the region and you have privacy with your own car and guide. Spring and October are the most comfortable months.

Will altitude be a problem?

Tawang is about 2,670 m, Sela about 4,170 m and the lakes above 4,000 m. With two nights in Dirang first most people manage well, but some get headaches. Your guide will adjust the plan. Talk to your doctor before you go if you have health conditions.

Can we visit during Torgya?

Yes. Torgya is usually in January. Book Vivanta Tawang months ahead, and expect cold nights well below freezing. Check current status before you travel for exact dates.

Can we fly from Tezpur?

Tezpur has limited flights, mostly to Kolkata. Many guests fly into Guwahati instead; we then add 3–4 hours of driving or a night in Guwahati at each end.

Is a guide really necessary?

Not for logistics, but a good guide explains what you are seeing: monastic life, Monpa history, the 1962 war, crafts and wildlife. On a signature trip it is a large part of the value.

What should we pack?

Warm layers including a down jacket, thermals, gloves and a hat; comfortable walking shoes; sunglasses and sun cream for the high lakes; any medicines; and printouts of your permits.

Can the trip be extended to Ziro?

Yes. We can add four to five nights in Ziro, driving via Bhalukpong and the Assam plains. See our Monpa and Apatani signature trip for that route.
