Kathmandu, Bandipur and Pokhara by private car

Nepal's classic first trip, without the bus. Three nights in Kathmandu at the Kathmandu Guest House with guided days in the old city, Patan and Bhaktapur, a night in the car-free Newar hill town of Bandipur, then three nights in Pokhara at Temple Tree Resort with Sarangkot sunrise and Phewa Lake.

Most Indian visitors to Nepal want three things: the temples and squares of the Kathmandu valley, the lake and mountain view at Pokhara, and a sense of village Nepal in between. This trip does all three with a private car and driver, so the long Prithvi Highway day is split by a night in Bandipur, an old Newar trading town on a ridge where the main street is kept free of cars.

We use the Kathmandu Guest House in Thamel, one of the oldest hotels in the area, with a garden away from the street noise; The Old Inn in Bandipur, a restored Newar house; and Temple Tree Resort in Pokhara, a short walk from the lake. Licensed guides take you around the heritage sites, and afternoons stay free for rest, cafés and shopping.

Highlights

  • Guided mornings at Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath and Patan
  • Evening aarti at Pashupatinath on the Bagmati
  • A full day in Bhaktapur, the best preserved of the valley's royal cities
  • Sunset and the morning mountain line from Bandipur's Tundikhel
  • Sarangkot sunrise and a rowing boat on Phewa Lake

Questions

About this trip

How much does a 7-night Nepal trip cost from India?

This private-car trip starts at ₹58,000 per person, twin sharing, with hotels, breakfasts, car and driver, guides and entry fees. Add return flights from Delhi to Kathmandu, usually ₹10,000–20,000, and meals. A saver version by tourist bus and hostels costs well under half.

Is Nepal good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Pokhara's lake, Bandipur's quiet street and the Kathmandu valley's courtyards make a relaxed honeymoon without long hikes. October to April has the clearest weather. We can upgrade Pokhara to a lake-view room or add a night at a hillside lodge for more privacy.

Can we do this trip with children and grandparents?

Yes. Drives are broken into short days except Kathmandu to Bandipur, and there is no altitude to worry about. Old buildings in Bandipur and Bhaktapur have steep stairs, so tell us about mobility needs and we choose ground-floor rooms where possible.

Do Indians need a visa for Nepal?

No. Indian citizens need either a valid passport or an Election Commission voter ID card to enter Nepal and to check into hotels. Aadhaar is not accepted for adults. Children under 15 can travel with a birth certificate and school ID in some cases; check current status before you travel.

Can we use Indian rupees in Nepal?

Indian ₹100 notes are widely accepted at the fixed rate of 1 INR to 1.6 NPR, but higher denominations have long had restrictions. Hotels on this trip accept cards. Change some money into NPR for small shops and temples, and check current status before you travel.

Is it better to fly or drive between Kathmandu and Pokhara?

Driving lets you stop at Bandipur, which is the point of this route. Flying takes 25 minutes but misses the countryside. On this trip we drive west and suggest flying back, so you do the long road only once.

What is the best time to visit Kathmandu and Pokhara?

October to December has clear skies and mountain views. February to April is warm with good views in the morning and rhododendron flowers in the hills. June to August is monsoon, with rain and cloud, though Kathmandu's festivals and the green terraces have their own appeal.

Is the food in Nepal suitable for vegetarians?

Very. Dal bhat, vegetable momos, aloo tama, Newari bara and Indian dishes are everywhere. Pokhara's Lakeside has many vegetarian and Indian restaurants. Jain food can be requested at bigger hotels with notice.

Can we add Chitwan National Park?

Yes. Chitwan is about 4–5 hours from Pokhara or Kathmandu and adds jungle walks, canoe rides and a chance of rhino sightings. Add two nights to the end of this trip; we quote it on request.
