Shimla was the summer capital of British India, and from it the Hindustan–Tibet road was cut east along the Sutlej towards the Tibetan border. This journey follows both stories. You arrive by the Kalka–Shimla railway, part of the Mountain Railways of India World Heritage Site, and stay at Wildflower Hall at Chharabra, on the site of Lord Kitchener's former residence, in deodar and oak forest above the town.

Then the road: Narkanda's orchards, the Sutlej gorge and the Baspa valley, where we use the best rooms at the Banjara camp by the river for three nights, and Kalpa, facing the Kinnaur Kailash range. Kinnaur has no luxury hotels; what it offers is space, villages and mountains, with a guide who explains them. Two nights at The Oberoi Cecil close the circle.

Highlights

  • The Kalka–Shimla toy train in first class
  • Two nights in the forest at Wildflower Hall
  • Three nights by the Baspa river in the Sangla valley
  • Chitkul and the wooden temples of Kamru and Kalpa
  • A guided heritage walk in Shimla from The Oberoi Cecil

Questions

About this trip

How much does a luxury Himachal and Kinnaur trip cost?

This plan is from ₹2,30,000 per person on twin sharing for 9 nights, with Oberoi stays in Shimla, the best rooms in Kinnaur, a private SUV, a guide and most meals. Prices rise in May–June and October and depend on room category at Wildflower Hall.

Is Wildflower Hall worth the price?

For a quiet, forested stay above Shimla with excellent service, yes. It sits at Chharabra, about 13 km from the Mall, on the site of Lord Kitchener's former residence. If you want to walk out into Shimla's streets, The Oberoi Cecil suits better, so we use both.

Is Kinnaur comfortable enough for a luxury trip?

Comfortable, yes; luxurious, no. We use the best riverside lodge in Sangla and the best view rooms in Kalpa, with good food and a private guide. The reward is the landscape and the villages, which no luxury hotel could add.

Is this trip suitable for a honeymoon?

Yes. Wildflower Hall and The Oberoi Cecil suit couples, and Sangla's riverside camp is quiet. Drives are long on three days, so it suits couples who enjoy the road. We can add a private dinner or spa time.

Will altitude be a problem?

Most guests are fine. Sleeping heights stay below 3,000 m and Chitkul is a day visit. Mild headache or poor sleep is common on the first night in Kalpa. Talk to your doctor before travelling if you have health concerns.

What is the best time for this journey?

May–June and September–October. October has the clearest skies and autumn colour; September brings the apple harvest. We avoid July–August for rockfall and December–March for snow in the upper Baspa valley.

Can we skip the toy train?

Yes. The car can drive you from Chandigarh to Chharabra in about 4 hours. The toy train adds a slow, scenic half-day; many guests love it, but it is not for everyone.

Is there mobile network in Kinnaur?

Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Sangla, Reckong Peo and Kalpa, but signal is weak in Chitkul. Wi-Fi in Kinnaur stays is basic. Shimla's hotels have reliable internet.

Can we extend to Spiti?

Yes. Indian citizens can continue from Kalpa via Nako and Tabo to Kaza and exit via Manali when the passes are open. It adds 5–7 nights and needs careful acclimatisation; we plan it as a separate Spiti extension.
