The Dhauladhar is the first big wall of the Himalaya that you see from the Punjab plains, and this trip runs along its foot. Chamba, on the Ravi, was the capital of one of the oldest hill states in the Himalaya and keeps its stone temples, its museum and its embroidery. McLeodganj, above Dharamshala, has been home to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile since 1960. Bir, in the eastern Kangra valley, has Tibetan monasteries and one of the best paragliding sites in Asia.

The order matters. Starting at Pathankot puts the long drive to Chamba on day one while you are fresh, and finishing at Bir leaves you an hour from Kangra airport. Hotels are good mid-range properties, with Chonor House, run by the Norbulingka Institute, as the anchor in McLeodganj.

Highlights

  • The Lakshmi Narayan temple group and the Bhuri Singh Museum in Chamba
  • Three nights at Chonor House, steps from the Tsuglagkhang
  • The Tibet Museum and the Lingkor walk in McLeodganj
  • Tea gardens at Palampur and the potters of Andretta
  • Tandem paragliding from Billing, for those who want it

Questions

About this trip

How much does a 7-night Dharamshala and Chamba trip cost?

This plan costs from ₹52,000 per person on twin sharing, with good hotels, breakfast and dinner, a private car and town guides. Trains, flights, lunches and paragliding are extra. Solo travellers pay a single supplement, and rates rise in peak weeks such as May and Diwali.

Is Chonor House worth it?

For McLeodganj, yes. It is run by the Norbulingka Institute, rooms are decorated by Tibetan artists, and it sits on Temple Road a short walk from the Tsuglagkhang, away from the noisy square. It is small, so we book well ahead.

Can I meet the Dalai Lama?

Private meetings are not arranged through travel companies. He sometimes gives public teachings at the Tsuglagkhang, which visitors can attend after registering with his office. Check the official schedule before you travel, as he is often away.

Is paragliding at Bir safe?

Tandem flights with licensed operators and experienced pilots have a good record, but it is an adventure sport with real risk. Fly only with registered operators, follow pilot instructions and accept cancellations when the wind is wrong. Check current status of the season and rules before you travel.

How hard is the Triund hike?

It is about 9 km each way from Dharamkot with a climb of around 800 m, taking 3–4 hours up for most people. It is steep in the last stretch. Wear proper shoes, carry water and avoid it in rain or snow. The Norbulingka alternative suits everyone.

What is the best time for this trip?

March to May and October to November are best. Skies are clear in autumn, rhododendrons bloom in March and April, and paragliding is in season. December to February is cold but quiet, with snow on the Dhauladhar.

Is this trip good for families and seniors?

Yes. Drives are 2–6 hours, altitudes are moderate and hotels are comfortable. Some temples and McLeodganj's lanes involve steps and slopes. Tell us about mobility needs and we will choose rooms and pace accordingly.

How do I reach Pathankot?

Overnight trains from Delhi reach Pathankot Cantt or Chakki Bank in the morning, and the Jammu-bound trains pass through it. Flights to Pathankot are limited; flying to Amritsar and driving 2.5 hours is another option. Check current status before you travel.

Can we add Dalhousie and Khajjiar?

Yes. Add one night in Dalhousie between Pathankot and Chamba and drive via Khajjiar's meadow. It adds about ₹6,000–9,000 per person depending on the hotel.
