The Oberoi Cecil, Shimla
A restored late-19th-century hotel on Shimla's Mall at Chaura Maidan, with colonial interiors, valley-view rooms and Oberoi service. The best address for exploring Shimla on foot in comfort.
The Cecil has stood at the western end of the Mall since the British summer-capital era and is one of Shimla's oldest hotels. After a long restoration by the Oberoi group in the 1990s it reopened as a heritage luxury hotel, keeping its timber-panelled atrium, high ceilings and colonial character. Rooms face either the valley or the town, and the valley side looks out over forested ridges.
Its location is the main advantage over Wildflower Hall: you can walk along the Mall to the Ridge and Christ Church, or west to the Viceregal Lodge, without a car. The hotel has restaurants, a bar and Oberoi spa services. Because private vehicles are restricted on the Mall, the hotel arranges access and luggage transfers. It suits travellers who want Shimla's history at the door and a high standard of comfort.
Why we use it

Shimla is Himachal's capital at about 2,200 m and the easiest hill town to reach from Delhi: 8–9 hours by HRTC Volvo, or by the Kalka–Shimla toy train. Spend two nights for the Ridge, Viceregal Lodge and a day out to the Kotgarh orchards. Avoid mid-May to June and New Year week.
