Namche's Saturday market

See how the Khumbu shops for the week: porters and traders from lower valleys lay out rice, vegetables, eggs, cloth and goods on the town square every Saturday morning. Time your acclimatisation day to fall on a Saturday.

Namche has been a market town for generations. Sherpa traders once brought salt, wool and goods from Tibet over the Nangpa La, and exchanged them for grain from the lowlands. Today the Saturday market, held in the centre of town, is mostly lowland produce carried up for days by porters from places like Solu and the Dudh Koshi valley.

Arrive early. You will see sacks of rice, flour and lentils, piles of cabbages and potatoes, trays of eggs, dried meat, cooking oil, clothing, shoes and plastic goods. Buyers come from Khumjung, Thame and higher villages. Prices are higher than in Kathmandu because everything is carried on someone's back or a yak.

Ask before photographing people, and do not haggle hard over food prices; porters carry these loads for long days. A daily Tibetan market selling clothing and Chinese goods also runs near the town's entrance.

Questions

Before you book

What day is the Namche market?

Saturday mornings. Plan your acclimatisation day in Namche for a Saturday if you want to see it.

Can I buy trekking gear at the Namche market?

The weekly market is mostly food and household goods. Gear shops in town sell jackets, poles and sleeping bags every day.

Why are prices higher in Namche?

Almost everything is carried up by porters or yaks for several days, so transport costs are built into prices.
