Namche Bazaar teahouse lodges
Namche's family-run teahouse lodges are the standard bed on the Everest trail: twin rooms, a stove-heated dining room and a menu of dal bhat, noodles and potatoes. Rooms are cheap if you eat in. Our saver EBC trek uses them throughout.
Dozens of Sherpa families run lodges in Namche, stacked up the horseshoe of terraces. A basic room has two single beds with foam mattresses and a blanket, plywood walls and a shared bathroom down the hall; better rooms have attached bathrooms and hot showers. The dining room, heated by a yak-dung or wood stove in the evening, is where everyone eats, dries socks and plans the next day.
Lodges price rooms low and expect you to eat dinner and breakfast with them; that is how they earn. Dal bhat with refills is the best-value meal. Hot showers, device charging and wifi cost extra. In October and April, ask your guide to book ahead; the best rooms on the upper terraces fill early.
Why we use it
- Cheapest honest bed on the Everest trail
- Warm communal dining rooms
- Easy to adjust plans day to day

Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar is the main Sherpa town of the Khumbu at 3,440 m, two days' walk from Lukla on the Everest Base Camp trail. Trekkers spend two nights here to acclimatise, with a hike to Khumjung or the Everest View ridge. It has a Saturday market, gear shops, bakeries and lodges at every budget.

Questions
About Namche Bazaar teahouse lodges
Do Namche teahouses have attached bathrooms?
Some rooms do, especially in newer lodges, at a higher price. Basic rooms share bathrooms.
Do I need a sleeping bag in Namche teahouses?
Lodges provide blankets, but a warm sleeping bag is strongly recommended for the trek, especially above Namche.
Why is food expensive if rooms are cheap?
Lodges make their money on meals, and food has to be carried up by porters and yaks. Eat where you sleep.
