Hill station in Nepal
The valley's eastern rim and a long line of peaks at dawn
Nagarkot is a ridge-top hill station on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu valley, about 32 km from Kathmandu at roughly 2,175 m. On clear mornings from October to March you can see eight of Nepal's Himalayan ranges, Everest included. Stay one night for sunset and sunrise and walk down to Changu Narayan.
Nagarkot began as a fort. Its position on the valley's eastern rim made it a lookout over the routes into the Kathmandu valley, and in later times it became a summer retreat for the royal family before hotels arrived. Today it is a scatter of lodges, pine woods and farm terraces along a ridge, with a view tower at the top and villages of farming families on the slopes below.
The reason to come is the horizon. On a clear morning the line of peaks runs from Annapurna and Manaslu in the west, through Ganesh Himal, Langtang and Jugal, to Rolwaling, the Everest group and Numbur in the east. Everest itself is a small point on the skyline and is visible only on the clearest days. October to March gives the best odds; from April, haze often hides everything after sunrise.
Nagarkot is an easy add-on to Bhaktapur, which is about 20 km below. Most people arrive in the afternoon, watch sunset, sleep, rise at 5:30 am for dawn, and then walk the panoramic trail down through villages and forest to Changu Narayan, one of the oldest temples in the valley.
The tower on the ridge top, about 30 minutes' walk or a short drive above the hotel area, gives the widest view. Arrive by 6 am in winter and stand with the line of peaks turning pink one after another from west to east.
On clear days you see the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Jugal, Rolwaling, Mahalangur (Everest) and Numbur ranges. A peak-finder chart at most lodges helps you name them.
A mostly downhill walk of about 3–4 hours through pine forest, terraces and farm villages ends at Changu Narayan, a Vishnu temple on a hilltop that is part of the valley's World Heritage listing.
Evenings are quieter than mornings. Find a lodge terrace facing west and watch the light drop over the valley floor, with Kathmandu's lights coming on below.
At over 2,000 m, Nagarkot is 6–8 °C cooler than Kathmandu. In April and May, when the valley is hot, it is a good place to sleep, though views are less reliable.
