Sonamarg had no permanent settlement and was cut off every winter by snow and avalanches, which is why most hotels here historically opened only from spring to autumn.

Valley in Kashmir
The meadow of gold on the old road to Ladakh
Sonamarg is a high meadow at 2,730 m in the Sindh valley, about 80 km north-east of Srinagar on the road to Zoji La and Ladakh. Come May to October for the Thajiwas glacier walk, river rafting and the start of the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. One night, or a long day trip, is enough for most.

The meadow sits in the upper Sindh valley at 2,730 m, ringed by fir, birch and steep snow peaks, with the Thajiwas glaciers spilling down a side valley to the south. It is the last broad green space before the road climbs to Zoji La, the pass into Ladakh.
Historically this was a stage on the trade route between Kashmir, Ladakh and Tibet. Caravans of wool, salt and pashmina came over the pass and rested here. Today the same road carries trucks, army convoys and tourists, and Sonamarg is the Kashmir end of the Srinagar–Leh highway. Baltal, 15 km further east below Zoji La, is the base for the shorter Amarnath Yatra route.
Sonamarg used to close completely in winter, with no permanent settlement. Since January 2025 the 6.5 km Sonamarg (Z-Morh) tunnel has bypassed the avalanche-prone stretch at Gagangir, so the meadow can now be reached through much of the winter for snow play. Hotels are fewer than in Gulmarg or Pahalgam, so book early in season.
A 3–4 km path, or a pony ride, leads from the main meadow into the Thajiwas side valley, where snowfields and glacier tongues come down close to the meadow. Admire them from a safe distance: sections of glacier ice collapsed in 2024.
The Kashmir Great Lakes trek begins at Shitkadi near Sonamarg and crosses high passes to Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal lakes before ending at Naranag. It takes about seven days and suits fit trekkers.
Short rafting runs on the Sindh river below Sonamarg operate from about May to August when water levels allow. Go only with licensed operators who provide helmets, life jackets and a safety kayaker or rope.
Fifteen kilometres beyond the meadow, Baltal sits at the foot of Zoji La. In yatra season it becomes the base for the 13 km route to the Amarnath cave. Drive part of the pass road for views back over the Sindh.
With the Z-Morh tunnel, Sonamarg is now a winter snow destination from Srinagar on many days. Expect sledges, snow boots for hire and very cold conditions. Check current road status before setting out.

Sonamarg was a gateway on the old trade routes linking Kashmir with Ladakh and Tibet, and Baltal, 15 km east of the meadow, sits at the foot of the Zoji La pass.

The 6.5 km Sonamarg Tunnel, also called the Z-Morh tunnel after the zigzag road it bypasses, opened in January 2025 to give Sonamarg road access through the winter.

Getting there
Air
Fly to Srinagar and drive about 85 km via Ganderbal and Kangan along the Sindh river, 2 h 30 min to 3 h depending on traffic.
Bus
Shared Sumos run from Srinagar to Kangan and Sonamarg in season, and JKSRTC has run seasonal buses. The Srinagar–Leh buses also pass through Sonamarg. Check current status before you travel.
Road
NH1 is open year-round to Sonamarg through the Z-Morh tunnel, subject to snow clearance. Beyond Sonamarg, Zoji La usually opens from about April or May to November or December. Check current status before you travel.
Where to stay
Saver: JKTDC runs huts and hotels in Sonamarg, including Hotel Kongposh, and simple guesthouses line the highway. Rates are higher than in Srinagar because the season is short. Comfort: a handful of three-star hotels near the main meadow and a few riverside camps in season. Signature: there is no top-end property to rival Gulmarg or Pahalgam; many comfort and signature travellers visit Sonamarg as a day trip from Srinagar.
Questions
Since the Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel opened in January 2025, Sonamarg can be reached on many winter days for snow play. Roads still close after heavy snowfall and avalanche warnings, and few hotels open in deep winter. Check current status before you travel and carry snow chains in your vehicle.
For most travellers a long day trip from Srinagar is enough. Stay a night if you are starting the Great Lakes trek, crossing Zoji La to Ladakh, or want the meadow quiet in the evening. Hotels are limited, so book early in June.
About 80–85 km along the Sindh valley via Ganderbal and Kangan, usually 2 h 30 min to 3 h. Traffic slows in July and August during the Amarnath Yatra, and convoys may run at fixed times.
A private taxi costs about ₹3,000–4,000 for the day. A pony to Thajiwas costs ₹800–1,500. Add lunch at ₹300–500. By shared Sumo, transport drops to about ₹500–800 return per person, but departures are irregular in the afternoon.
Yes. NH1 continues over Zoji La at about 3,528 m to Drass and Kargil, and on to Leh. The pass usually opens from about April or May to November or December. It is a long, rough drive; check current status and plan acclimatisation for Ladakh.
Postpaid networks usually work near the main market, but coverage is weak up the valleys. ATMs are few and unreliable. Bring cash from Srinagar for ponies, rafting and food.
Yes, at 2,730 m most seniors manage a day visit comfortably. Use a pony or walk slowly to Thajiwas, and avoid the snowfields if mobility is limited. People with heart or lung conditions should talk to their doctor before travelling to altitude.
Walking on glacier ice, entering ice caves, rafting without a registered operator, and agreeing to pony rides without fixing the price. Also avoid driving the road on yatra convoy mornings in July and August unless you have checked timings.
Gulmarg has the gondola and skiing; Sonamarg has a wilder river valley, glaciers and trekking. In summer we suggest both if you have time. In winter Gulmarg is the safer bet for snow sports, while Sonamarg is a snow day trip.
