Rafting the Sindh below Sonamarg
In summer, local operators run short rafting stretches on the Sindh river just below Sonamarg. The water is glacier-fed, cold and lively, with mostly grade II to III rapids on the standard sections. It is a fun add-on to a Sonamarg day for confident swimmers and teenagers.
Operators gather along the highway just below the meadow and offer runs of a few kilometres, usually ending near a road point where vehicles bring you back. Standard stretches have grade II to III rapids, enough to get soaked but manageable for first-timers who follow instructions. Flows are highest from late May to July with snowmelt.
Choose an operator registered with the tourism department, and check for a safety briefing, helmets, properly fitted life jackets, and a rescue kayak or throw rope. Wetsuits or splash jackets are worth paying a little extra for, because the water is just above freezing. Leave phones and valuables in the vehicle.
Children under about 14, non-swimmers and seniors should think twice; many operators set age limits. After rain the river can rise fast and turn muddy; good operators cancel. Have warm dry clothes ready for afterwards and a hot kahwa at the stalls by the road.

Questions
Before you book
Is river rafting in Sonamarg safe?
It is reasonably safe with a registered operator, proper life jackets, helmets and a rescue kayak or rope. The water is very cold and fast, so falls are serious. Avoid operators who skip the briefing, and cancel if the river is high and muddy after rain.
What is the minimum age for rafting in Sonamarg?
Operators set their own limits, commonly around 14 years for the standard stretch. Younger children are usually not allowed on rapids. Ask before booking and check that life jackets come in child sizes if they are allowed.
When does rafting run in Sonamarg?
Roughly May to August, when snowmelt gives enough water. Operations depend on daily river levels and weather. By September flows drop and many operators close. Check current status locally on the day.
