First ski lessons on the Gulmarg nursery slopes
Gulmarg is the best place in India to learn to ski. Gentle slopes near the meadow, rental shops by the gondola and certified local instructors make it easy to start, and three days of lessons gets most beginners linking turns on the easier runs.
Beginners start on the gentle slopes around the meadow, served by short surface lifts, before moving up to the easier Kongdori runs. Instructors certified by the tourism department or the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering (IISM) are available through hotels and the ski shops near the gondola base. Agree the rate per day and whether it includes lift passes before you start.
IISM, a government institute in Gulmarg, runs structured courses for Indian nationals through the winter, including accommodation and equipment. Seats are limited and booked months ahead, so check their calendar in autumn. For a short trip, private lessons are more flexible: three to five half days is enough for most fit adults to ski the nursery slopes confidently.
Rent gear on the first morning and get boots fitted carefully; poorly fitting boots spoil more ski days than bad weather. Dress in waterproof layers, gloves and goggles, and avoid jeans. Snow quality is usually best in late January and February. Off-piste runs from Apharwat are for experienced skiers with guides and avalanche equipment only.

Questions
Before you book
How much does skiing in Gulmarg cost for a beginner?
For a three-day beginner trip, budget about ₹2,500–4,000 a day for an instructor, ₹1,000–2,000 a day for skis, boots and poles, and a few hundred for surface lifts. Clothing can be hired too. Accommodation is extra and rises sharply over Christmas and New Year.
When is the ski season in Gulmarg?
Usually mid-December to mid-March, depending on snowfall. Late January and February have the deepest base and most reliable conditions. Early December and late March can be thin. Check snow reports and avalanche bulletins before you travel.
Can children learn to ski in Gulmarg?
Yes. Children from about six years can take lessons on the nursery slopes, and some instructors specialise in kids. Short sessions of two hours work best. Hire child-sized boots and helmets, and keep them well layered against the cold.
