This is the trip most families and couples have in mind when they think of Kashmir, planned so that no day has more than about four hours in the car. We start with three nights at Ahdoos on Residency Road, close to Lal Chowk, Dal Lake and its own well-known wazwan restaurant. From Srinagar we make a day trip to Sonamarg, so you see the Sindh valley without a night at 2,730 m.

Then two nights at Highlands Park, an old Gulmarg hotel on a rise above the meadow, for an unhurried gondola day. The last two nights are at The Pahalgam Hotel, open since the early 1930s, near the Lidder. A Pahalgam union taxi takes you to Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari, as local rules require, and your own car waits in town.

Highlights

  • Evening shikara on Dal Lake and Nishat, Shalimar and Chashme Shahi gardens
  • Thajiwas glacier walk on a Sonamarg day trip
  • Gulmarg Gondola to Kongdori and, weather allowing, Apharwat
  • Saffron fields of Pampore and the Avantipora temple ruins
  • Aru and Betaab Valley in the Lidder valley

About Srinagar
3Day

Day trip to Sonamarg

Night: Ahdoos Hotel, Srinagar2,730 m≈ 160 km round trip · 6 h drivingMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

Leave by 7.30 am up the Sindh valley through Ganderbal and Kangan to Sonamarg at 2,730 m. Walk or ride a pony on the fixed-rate route to the Thajiwas glacier, about 3 km from the road; union rates are posted at the stand. Lunch at a riverside dhaba. In July and August, Amarnath traffic towards Baltal slows this road; we may swap this day for Doodhpathri if convoys are heavy. Back in Srinagar by early evening.

About Sonamarg
4Day

Srinagar to Gulmarg

Night: Hotel Highlands Park, Gulmarg2,650 m≈ 55 km · 1 h 30 min–2 hMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

A short drive west through Magam and Tangmarg, then hairpins through pine forest to Gulmarg at 2,650 m. Check in at Highlands Park, on a rise facing Apharwat. In the afternoon walk the meadow loop: St Mary's Church, the Maharani temple on its knoll, and the edge of the golf course, one of the highest in the world. Ponies and their handlers are everywhere; agree rates from the posted list only if you want a ride.

About Gulmarg
5Day

Gulmarg Gondola day

Night: Hotel Highlands Park, Gulmarg2,650 mMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

Your gondola tickets are booked online for the first slots. Phase 1 climbs to Kongdori, near 3,080 m, where you can walk across the bowl. If the weather is clear and Phase 2 is running, continue to the Apharwat ridge near 3,950 m; walk slowly there and come down if anyone feels unwell. In the afternoon, walk the forest path towards Khilanmarg or rest at the hotel. Phase 2 often closes for wind or cloud; check on the day.

About Gulmarg
6Day

Gulmarg to Pahalgam via Pampore

Night: The Pahalgam Hotel2,200 m≈ 150 km · 4 h 30 min–5 hMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

Drive back past Srinagar and south on the highway. Stop at Pampore, where saffron is grown on the karewa plateaus; in late October and early November the fields are purple with flowers. Stop again at Avantipora for the 9th-century Avantiswami temple ruins, cared for by the Archaeological Survey of India. Turn up the Lidder valley at Anantnag to reach Pahalgam by mid-afternoon, then walk by the river.

About Pahalgam
7Day

Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari

Night: The Pahalgam Hotel2,414 m≈ 60 km round trip · full day by union taxiMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

Pahalgam's taxi union runs local sightseeing, so you switch to a union taxi for the day at the posted rate. Go first to Aru, 12 km up the West Lidder, and walk beyond the village to the meadow and herders' huts. Then Betaab Valley, named after a 1983 Hindi film shot there, and Chandanwari, start of the Amarnath route, which may be closed to tourists in July and August. Evening free in Pahalgam.

About Aru Valley
8Day

Pahalgam to Srinagar airport

1,585 m≈ 100 km · 3 hMeals: Breakfast

After breakfast, drive down the Lidder valley and back along the highway to Srinagar airport. If your flight is late in the day, stop at a Pampore shop for saffron and kahwa, or at Bijbehara for its chinar groves along the Jhelum. Allow two hours at the airport; security checks start at the outer gate and can take time.

Questions

About this trip

What does ₹54,000 per person include?

Seven nights twin sharing with breakfast and dinner at three long-running hotels, a private car with driver for eight days, a Pahalgam union taxi day, Gondola Phase 1 tickets and a shikara hour. It assumes April–June or September–October outside the busiest holiday weeks. Flights, lunches, Phase 2, ponies, entry fees and tips are extra.

Can we stay on a houseboat instead of Ahdoos?

Yes. We can swap one or all Srinagar nights to a deluxe houseboat on Nigeen or Dal Lake at a similar price. Houseboats are atmospheric but quieter at night and less central, and getting to shore needs a shikara. We suggest one houseboat night and two hotel nights for families with small children.

Is this trip suitable for seniors and small children?

Yes. Drives are short, all nights are below 2,700 m and hotels are central. Pony rides and the gondola are optional. For seniors, we keep Phase 2 off the plan unless their doctor agrees, since the top is near 3,950 m. For toddlers, carry warm layers even in June, as Gulmarg evenings are cool.

Do we need to book the Gulmarg Gondola in advance?

Yes. We book Phase 1 online on the official cable car corporation site for an early slot, as tickets sell out in May, June and October. Phase 2 depends on wind and cloud and often closes at short notice. If it is open on the day, we can buy Phase 2 at the counter or online; check current status before you travel.

Why do we need a separate taxi in Pahalgam?

Pahalgam's taxi union runs local sightseeing to Aru, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari, and outside cars are not allowed to do these trips. Rates are fixed and posted at the stand. Your Srinagar driver waits in town. We include the union taxi in the price, so you do not have to negotiate.

Is it safe to travel in Kashmir now?

Millions of domestic tourists visit Kashmir each year, and tourist areas have a strong police and army presence. Incidents do happen, so we follow official advisories, keep to main tourist areas and adjust plans on local advice. Check current government travel advisories and current status before you travel.

When is the best time for this trip?

April to June for green meadows, snow on the peaks and the tulip garden in April; September and October for clear skies, cool days and autumn colour. July and August work but bring yatra traffic and some showers. Winter suits snow lovers; see our winter Gulmarg trip for that season.

Can we add Doodhpathri or Yusmarg?

Yes. Either is a day trip from Srinagar, about 42 km and 50 km, taking 1 h 30 min–2 h each way. Adding one day and night in Srinagar costs about ₹6,000–8,000 per person with the car. Both are good alternatives to Sonamarg in July and August when Amarnath traffic slows the Sindh valley road.

What food should we try?

In Srinagar try rogan josh, rista, gushtaba and yakhni from a wazwan menu, nun chai with girda bread at breakfast, and saffron kahwa in the afternoon. Vegetarians do well with dum aloo, nadru yakhni and haak with rice. Ahdoos has one of the city's best-known Kashmiri restaurants, so one dinner there is easy.
