Urgelling, birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama
A small, old temple a few kilometres below Tawang where Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama, was born in 1683. Quiet, rarely crowded and full of meaning for Monpa and Tibetan Buddhists alike.
Urgelling is a modest temple surrounded by fields and prayer flags on the slope below Tawang town. It was founded in 1489 by Urgen Sangpo, nearly two centuries before the great monastery above. Its fame rests on one birth: Tsangyang Gyatso, recognised as the 6th Dalai Lama, was born here on 1 March 1683. An inscription at the site records it as his birthplace.
The 6th Dalai Lama is remembered in Tibetan culture less as a ruler than as a poet. His short love songs are still recited and sung across the Himalaya, and Monpa families speak of him with affection as a son of Mon. Inside the temple, a caretaker may show the old images and point out objects associated with his family. If the door is locked, ask in the neighbouring houses; someone usually comes with the key.
Combine Urgelling with the walk or drive back up to the market, or with a visit to one of the nunneries on the hills around town. The temple is small, so plan an hour. Dress modestly, walk clockwise around the building, and leave a small offering if you wish. It is one of the few sights in Tawang where you may be the only visitor.

Questions
Before you book
How far is Urgelling from Tawang town?
Urgelling lies a few kilometres below the town centre, about 15–20 minutes by taxi on a narrow road. Some visitors walk down and take a taxi back up, since the return climb is steep at this altitude. Local taxis charge roughly ₹300–500 for the return trip with waiting time.
Is Urgelling open every day?
It is usually open in daylight, but the door may be locked if the caretaker is away. Neighbours often fetch the key. Go in the morning, be patient, and ask your hotel or driver to call ahead if you have limited time.
Why is Urgelling important?
It is the birthplace of Tsangyang Gyatso, the 6th Dalai Lama, born here in 1683. He is loved across the Tibetan Buddhist world for his poetry. For Monpa families, the site ties Tawang directly to the history of the Dalai Lamas.
