Lachung village homestays
Family homes across Lachung's hamlets take guests in a few rooms each, with home-cooked dinners and breakfasts. They are the warmest, most rooted way to spend the night before Yumthang, and the money stays with Lachungpa families.
Many households in Lachung host travellers, usually in two to four rooms in a wooden or stone family house. Rooms are simple, with thick quilts, and bathrooms may be attached or shared. The kitchen, warmed by a stove, is the centre of the house, and meals of rice, dal, vegetables, eggs and sometimes meat are served there.
Homestays are generally booked through Gangtok agencies as part of a North Sikkim permit tour; ask for a homestay rather than a hotel when you book. Expect limited power and hot water in buckets in winter. Hosts can arrange walks to the monastery and the 6 am departure for Yumthang. Follow Dzumsa rules on noise and litter.
