North Sikkim on a budget, 5 nights

North Sikkim is priced for private vehicles, but shared permit tours let one traveller or a couple go up to Lachung without paying for a whole jeep. Agencies in Gangtok put together shared seats, a homestay and meals into a package. The trade-off is a fixed schedule and travelling with strangers.

We use that model here and add the Tsomgo day trip from Gangtok. Gurudongmar and Lachen are not in this saver budget, because they need extra nights and a private vehicle. Permit rules for Tsomgo, Nathu La and North Sikkim change often and differ for Indian and foreign nationals; check current status before you travel.

Highlights

  • Tsomgo Lake at about 3,750 m on the Nathu La road
  • A night in a Lachungpa family home with a wood stove
  • Yumthang Valley's flat river basin and, in April and May, its rhododendrons
  • The Teesta and Lachen Chu valleys above Chungthang
  • Gangtok's MG Marg after a cold day out

Day by day

6 days in Sikkim

1Day

Arrive in Gangtok

Night: Guesthouse, Gangtok1,650 mMeals: Dinner on your own

Reach Gangtok by shared jeep from Siliguri or Bagdogra, about 4–5 hours. Choose a registered travel agent on the same day to confirm your Tsomgo seat and the North Sikkim package; they need photo ID and passport photos. Foreign nationals also need a Restricted Area Permit. Walk MG Marg for momos and an early night.

About Gangtok
2Day

Tsomgo Lake day trip

Night: Guesthouse, Gangtok3,753 m≈ 40 km · 1.5–2 h each wayMeals: Breakfast

Leave around 7 am in a shared jeep up the Nathu La road to Tsomgo Lake, at about 3,750 m. Walk slowly and drink water; the first hour at this altitude is when headaches start. Spend an hour at the lake, then return to Gangtok by early afternoon. Nathu La is open only to Indian nationals on set days; check current status before you travel.

About Tsomgo Lake
3Day

Gangtok to Lachung

Night: Homestay, Lachung2,700 m≈ 115 km · 6–7 hMeals: Dinner, Breakfast

The shared vehicle leaves early, goes through Mangan and Chungthang, and reaches Lachung at about 2,700 m by mid-afternoon. Roads may be slow after rain. Your homestay hosts dinner and breakfast; the kitchen stove is the warm room. Walk to the village monastery in the late light. Mobile networks fade above Mangan, so tell home your plans before you leave.

About Lachung
4Day

Yumthang Valley

Night: Homestay, Lachung3,560 m≈ 24 km · 1–1.5 h each wayMeals: Breakfast, Dinner

Leave before dawn to reach Yumthang Valley, at about 3,560 m, while the light is soft and before the afternoon clouds. Walk along the river, drink hot tea at a roadside stall, and return to Lachung for lunch. Spend the afternoon resting, because the altitude and early start tire most people. In winter, snow may close the upper road; check current status before you travel.

About Yumthang Valley
5Day

Lachung to Gangtok

Night: Guesthouse, Gangtok1,650 m≈ 115 km · 6–7 hMeals: Breakfast

Drive back through Chungthang and Mangan, with a lunch stop on the road. You reach Gangtok by evening and can sleep in the same guesthouse as before. If a landslide blocks the road, the driver will wait; keep a buffer day before any onward flight.

About Gangtok
6Day

Depart Gangtok

≈ 115 km · 4–5 hMeals: Breakfast

Take a shared jeep from the Gangtok stand to Siliguri, Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri. Book trains or flights for the evening or the next day, not the same morning, to allow for landslides and road works on NH10.

Questions

About this trip

Is this trip possible in winter?

Yes, in a cold-weather window from December to February, when Lachung and Yumthang are snowy and Tsomgo may be frozen. Roads can close without notice. Check current status before you travel and keep a buffer day.

Can foreign nationals do this trip?

Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit and a Protected Area Permit for North Sikkim, usually arranged by a registered agency and sometimes with a minimum group size. Rules change; check current status before you travel.

How cold does Lachung get?

Nights in winter fall well below freezing and days stay cold. In April and May expect cool days and chilly nights. Pack thermals, a fleece and a down jacket year-round.

Is altitude sickness a risk on this itinerary?

It can be, since Tsomgo is at about 3,750 m, a 2,100 m gain in a morning from Gangtok. Go slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol and descend if symptoms worsen. Talk to your doctor before you travel.

Can I book a homestay and a private jeep instead?

Yes, it costs more. A private jeep for Lachung and Yumthang runs roughly ₹9,000–15,000 depending on season. Ask your agency for a quote and which permits they handle.

What does the agency need from me?

Photocopies of an ID, passport-size photos, and for foreigners a passport copy and Indian visa copy, usually a day before travel. Some operators ask for payment up front.

Will I see Gurudongmar on this trip?

No. Gurudongmar is at about 5,100–5,200 m and needs a night in Lachen and a permit; it is open to Indian nationals. See our comfort North Sikkim trip.

Is vegetarian food easy in Lachung?

Yes. Homestays serve dal, rice, vegetables and eggs; meat appears in some meals. Say you are vegetarian when booking, and carry some snacks for the road.

Can I stay more nights in Lachung?

Yes, an extra night lets you walk to the village and rest after the early start. Tell your agency when booking, as shared departures run on fixed dates.
