Nubra's Tibetan name, Ldumra or Dumra, means valley of flowers, a contrast with the high desert around it. The Nubra river itself was historically called the Yarma Tsangpo in Tibetan sources.

Valley in Ladakh
The old caravan valley over Khardung La, with dunes and orchards
Nubra is the green valley of the Shyok and Nubra rivers, about 120 km north of Leh over Khardung La (5,359 m). Stay two nights around Diskit or Hunder at roughly 3,100 m. See Diskit Monastery, the dunes and Bactrian camels, and orchard villages. Indians need the online environment fee receipt.
Its old Tibetan name, Ldumra, means valley of flowers, and after the bare climb over Khardung La the contrast is real: willow and poplar groves, barley fields, apricot and walnut trees and thorny sea buckthorn along the river beds. Nubra is lower than Leh, around 3,100 m at Diskit, which makes it the gentlest overnight stop beyond the Ladakh Range.
For centuries this was the caravan road to Central Asia. Traders went up the Nubra river towards the Saser and Karakoram passes and on to Yarkand, and Nubra's villages made their living supplying them. The route to Yarkand has been closed since 1950, but the two-humped Bactrian camels that now carry tourists over the Hunder dunes are a reminder of that trade.
The valley has three arms. The western arm along the Shyok holds Diskit, the main town, and Hunder, once the capital of the old Nubra kingdom, then runs down to Turtuk. The northern arm along the Nubra river holds Sumur, Tegar and Panamik with its hot springs. A newer road from Agham along the Shyok links Nubra to Pangong, so you can make a loop without returning to Leh.
Diskit's 14th-century Gelug monastery climbs a ridge above the Shyok. Below it, a 32 m Maitreya Buddha, consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 2010, looks down the valley. Visit the old prayer hall first, then walk down to the statue in late afternoon light.
Between Hunder and Diskit lie about 7 km of sand dunes, with Bactrian camels grazing in the sea buckthorn. Short rides start from Hunder in the early morning and before sunset. Pick an operator who rests the animals in the midday heat.
The road from Leh climbs to 5,359 m before dropping into Nubra. Stop for 10–15 minutes only, for photographs and the view of the Karakoram, then keep descending. It is a pass to cross, not a place to linger.
The Nubra river arm is quieter. Samstanling Monastery sits above Sumur and Tegar, and Panamik is known for its hot springs. Village lanes here are lined with irrigation channels and walled orchards, ideal for a slow afternoon walk.
Hunder was the capital of the old Nubra kingdom. Above the village are the ruins of the king's palace and a hilltop fort, with small white and red temples. Few visitors climb up; go early, carry water and stay on the path.

In the 16th century the people of Nubra persuaded the Ladakhi king not to invade the lands beyond the Karakoram, because their trade with Yarkand was too important to risk.

Questions
Two nights is the minimum: one day to cross Khardung La and see Diskit and the dunes, one for Sumur, Panamik or a day trip to Turtuk. Three nights let you stay in Turtuk too. A single night is possible but means seven to nine hours on the road in two days, which is tiring at this altitude.
Indian citizens pay the online Environment and Development Fee and carry the printed receipt and photo ID; there is no separate Inner Line Permit now. Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit arranged through a registered Leh travel agency. Permits are checked at North Pullu. Rules change, so check current status before you travel.
Postpaid Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in Diskit and Hunder, with weaker signal in Sumur and Panamik. Prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh do not work. Many camps have Wi-Fi that drops often. Download offline maps and tell your family your route before leaving Leh.
Hunder is closest to the dunes and has the most camps. Diskit has more guesthouses, shops and the only reliable ATM. Sumur and Tegar, on the Nubra river arm, are quieter and closer to Panamik. For a first visit, one night in Hunder or Diskit and one in Sumur or Turtuk works well.
Yes. A road along the Shyok via Agham and Shyok village links Nubra to Pangong without returning to Leh, about 6–7 hours from Hunder. The road crosses river beds and can be damaged by summer melt water, so leave early. Check current status before you travel with your driver or locals.
Yes. Nubra is lower than Leh, around 3,100 m, and the dunes and camels are popular with children. The hard part is Khardung La: cross it only after two nights in Leh, keep children warm in the car at the top and do not linger. Talk to your doctor before the trip for very young children.
On a saver budget, the bus or a shared taxi and a homestay cost roughly ₹4,000–6,000 per person for two nights. A union taxi for two days costs about ₹11,800 for the car, shared by up to four or five people, plus camps from about ₹3,500 a double with meals. Fares change each season.
Days in June to August are warm, often 20–30 °C in the sun at Diskit, while nights drop to around 8–12 °C. Khardung La can be below freezing even in July. Pack a fleece and a windproof jacket for the pass and sun protection for the dunes.
Diskit has an ATM, but it can run out of cash at weekends or when the network is down. Hunder, Sumur and Turtuk depend on cash and occasional UPI. Withdraw enough in Leh for your whole Nubra stay, including camel rides and monastery fees.
