Lamayuru

Ladakh's old gompa above the eroded moonland

Lamayuru is a Drikung Kagyu monastery and village at about 3,510 m on the Srinagar–Leh highway, 125 km west of Leh. It is one of the oldest and largest gompas in Ladakh, set above pale eroded lake sediments people call moonland. See it as a long day trip or a night on the road to Kargil.

Coming from Leh, the highway leaves the Indus at Khalatse and climbs a narrow gorge. Then the valley opens and Lamayuru appears all at once: white monastery buildings stacked on a crag, mud-brick houses spilling down below it, and around them a strange landscape of soft yellow and grey ridges cut into fins and gullies by wind and water. Most visitors stop for an hour. We think it deserves a night.

Lamayuru Monastery belongs to the Drikung Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism and is counted among the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh. Tradition says the valley was once a lake, and that the Indian teacher Naropa caused it to drain before a monastery was founded on its shore. Whatever you make of the story, the pale ground around the village does look like old lake bed, and the monastery's oldest shrines sit on the rock above it.

Lamayuru also matters for planning. At 3,510 m it is almost exactly the height of Leh, so on the road from Srinagar it is a good place to sleep after Kargil (2,676 m) before arriving in Leh. Going the other way, it is the start of classic treks into Zanskar and the Sham valley, and the gateway to Fotu La (4,108 m), the highest point on the Srinagar–Leh highway.

What to do in Lamayuru

Lamayuru Monastery at prayer time

Climb into the assembly hall in the early morning when monks gather for prayers with horns, cymbals and butter tea. Look for the small cave shrine linked by tradition to Naropa. Visitors sit quietly at the back; ask before any photography.

The moonland ridges

Below the village, soft pale sediments have weathered into fins, towers and gullies. They glow yellow at sunset and turn grey at noon. The best views are from the highway bends just east of the village and from the monastery roof.

Wanla's small hilltop temple

About 10 km south on a side road, Wanla village has a small, old temple to Avalokiteshvara on a ridge with a ruined fort. It sees few visitors. Ask in the village for the caretaker with the key.

Fotu La on the road to Kargil

Fifteen kilometres west, the highway crosses Fotu La at 4,108 m, the highest pass on the Srinagar–Leh road. The top has prayer flags and long views back over Lamayuru. Stop briefly; do not linger if you have just arrived.

Trailhead for Zanskar and Sham treks

Lamayuru is the classic start of the long trek south to Padum in Zanskar and of shorter routes over the passes to Wanla, Hinju and Chilling. Arrange ponies and a guide in Leh, not on arrival.

Khalatse and its apricots

On the way from Leh, Khalatse sits low on the Indus at about 3,000 m, with two crops a year and orchards along the road. Stop for apricot juice in July or dried fruit the rest of the year.

Questions

Lamayuru, answered

How far is Lamayuru from Leh?

Lamayuru is about 125 km west of Leh on the Srinagar highway, a drive of 3.5–4 hours via Nimmu, Saspol and Khalatse. A union taxi day trip costs roughly ₹7,000–9,000 for the car. Many people combine it with Alchi and Likir, or stop here on the way to Kargil.

Is Lamayuru worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are driving between Leh and Kargil. The monastery is one of the oldest and largest in Ladakh, and the eroded moonland around it looks unlike anywhere else on the highway. If you only have a week flying in and out of Leh, Nubra and Pangong may come first.

Do I need a permit for Lamayuru?

No. Lamayuru is on the Srinagar–Leh highway and does not need an Inner Line Permit, Protected Area Permit or the environment fee receipt used for Nubra and Pangong. Carry photo ID for routine checks. Rules change, so check current status before you travel.

What is the altitude of Lamayuru and will I get altitude sickness?

Lamayuru is about 3,510 m, close to Leh's height. If you have already spent two nights in Leh it should feel similar. If you are coming from Srinagar, sleeping at Kargil (2,676 m) first and then Lamayuru is a gentle way up. Talk to your doctor before travel if you have heart or lung conditions.

Can I stay overnight in Lamayuru?

Yes. Several family guesthouses and small hotels near the monastery and on the highway charge about ₹1,500–3,000 per person with dinner and breakfast. Rooms are simple and some have shared bathrooms. Book ahead in July and August when trekking groups pass through.

When is the Lamayuru festival?

Lamayuru holds masked-dance festivals on dates set by the Tibetan lunar calendar; the best known is Yuru Kabgyat, which usually falls in summer. Dates move each year, so check current status with the monastery or a Leh travel agency before you travel.

Is there mobile network and an ATM in Lamayuru?

Coverage is patchy: BSNL and some postpaid networks work near the highway, but do not rely on data. Prepaid SIMs from outside Ladakh do not work. There is no reliable ATM, so carry enough cash from Leh or Kargil for rooms, food and monastery fees.

Can I trek from Lamayuru?

Yes. Lamayuru is the start of the long trek south to Padum in Zanskar, usually 10 days or more, and of shorter routes to Wanla, Hinju and over Konze La to Chilling. Arrange a guide and ponies through a registered Leh agency, and acclimatise in Leh for at least three nights first.

Is Lamayuru suitable for families with children?

Yes, as a day trip or one night. The monastery visit involves stairs and uneven floors but no long walk, and children usually enjoy the moonland views. The drive from Leh is long, so plan stops at Alchi or Khalatse. Carry warm layers, snacks and water.
