Jim Corbett's house at Kaladhungi

Jim Corbett, hunter of man-eaters and later a conservationist, spent his winters at Chhoti Haldwani near Kaladhungi, 35 km below Nainital. His house is now the Jim Corbett Museum, with his furniture, letters and the graves of his two dogs in the garden.

Corbett grew up in Nainital, where his family spent summers, and wintered in the foothills at Kaladhungi. Kaladhungi means black stone, after the iron-rich rock once smelted here with forest charcoal. The road from Nainital drops about 1,500 m in 35 km through oak, then pine, then sal forest, which is itself a lesson in how altitude shapes the Kumaon forest.

The house at Chhoti Haldwani, about 2 km west of Kaladhungi on the Ramnagar road, is run as a museum by the forest department. Rooms hold Corbett's belongings, photographs, maps of the man-eater hunts he later described in his books, and in the garden the graves of his dogs. Allow an hour; there is a small shop selling his books.

Corbett helped the villagers of Chhoti Haldwani with land and farming, and the village still values that link. Combine the visit with a stop at the Corbett waterfall a few kilometres away, or continue to Ramnagar for Jim Corbett National Park, about 30 km further. Closing days and fees change, so check current status before you travel.
