Long weekend from Delhi: Nainital and Bhimtal

A three-night long weekend from Delhi that uses the overnight train both ways, so you lose no daylight. One night at Bhimtal for the quieter lakes and Sattal's birds, two in Nainital for the dawn row, the ridges and Kainchi Dham. Honest guesthouse rooms and shared taxis keep it affordable.

The trick to a cheap weekend in Kumaon is the train. Take the overnight Ranikhet Express or a similar service from Delhi on Thursday or Friday night, wake at Kathgodam around dawn, and you are at Bhimtal before breakfast. Going home, the evening train from Kathgodam has you back in Delhi for work. Sleeper class is cheapest; 3AC is warmer and more comfortable.

We start at Bhimtal rather than Nainital because it is 45 minutes from the station, calmer and cheaper, and Sattal's lakes and birds are close. Then two nights in Nainital give time for the lake at dawn, Snow View or Tiffin Top, and a morning at Kainchi Dham. Rooms are simple guesthouses with attached bathrooms; on long weekends prices rise, so book early.

Highlights

  • Overnight train both ways, so three full days in the hills
  • Sattal's forest lakes and birds at dawn
  • A hand-rowed boat to the Naina Devi temple at first light
  • Snow View ropeway or the Tiffin Top walk on Ayarpata
  • An early weekday visit to Kainchi Dham

Questions

About this trip

Which train should I take from Delhi to Kathgodam for a weekend?

The overnight Ranikhet Express from Delhi Junction is the classic choice, arriving at Kathgodam early morning. Other overnight services also run. Book as early as possible and check current timings before you travel.

Is ₹7,500 the full cost of this weekend?

It covers 3 nights' rooms with breakfast, shared taxis and one boat ride, per person on twin sharing. Add trains (about ₹700–2,000 return per person by class), meals of ₹500–800 a day and tickets. Long weekends cost more.

Can we do this trip by bus instead of train?

Yes. Uttarakhand Roadways runs overnight buses from Delhi's Anand Vihar to Haldwani and Nainital, including Volvo services. The train is usually more comfortable and predictable.

Is this trip good for families with children?

Yes. The drives are short, Bhimtal is calm, and children enjoy boats and the ropeway. Carry motion-sickness tablets for the hill road and warm layers for the evenings.

Can we stay only in Nainital instead of Bhimtal?

You can, but Bhimtal on the first night means a shorter ride after the train, lower prices and a quieter start. It also puts Sattal within easy reach.

What is the weather like for this weekend trip?

Days are mild most of the year, about 15–25 °C from March to June and October, and colder from November to February with near-freezing nights. July and August are rainy.

Is it safe for a solo woman to do this trip?

Yes, this is a well-travelled route. Use taxis from the official stands, stay in central Mallital, and avoid forest paths after dark. We share guesthouses with good records for solo guests.

Can we add Mukteshwar to this weekend?

Not comfortably in three nights. Add a fourth night and go to Mukteshwar from Nainital via Bhowali, about 2 hours each way.

What if the train is late?

The plan has slack on the first day. If the train is very late, we move the Sattal walk to the second morning. On the last day, leave Nainital early enough to reach Kathgodam two hours before departure.
