Sattal and Binsar show two layers of Himalayan forest a few hours apart. Sattal, low and warm, holds barbets, woodpeckers, blue magpies, kingfishers and, in winter, thrushes and forktails on its streams. Binsar, higher and cooler, holds oak specialists, nuthatches, laughingthrushes and pheasants such as kalij and koklass. Together they give a strong list in a week.

We stay near Sattal for three nights so you can be on the forest road at first light without a long drive, then three nights inside Binsar sanctuary at the KMVN rest house, a short walk from the best oak forest. Local guides lead five dawn sessions; afternoons are for rest, photo review or quieter solo walks. We prefer guides who do not use playback.

Highlights

  • Five dawn sessions with local birding guides
  • Sattal's streams for forktails and thrushes in winter
  • Barbets, woodpeckers and blue magpies in Sattal's forest
  • Kalij pheasant and oak-forest flocks in Binsar
  • Sunrise over the high Himalaya from Binsar's Zero Point

  • All nights are below 2,500 m; altitude is not a concern for healthy travellers.
  • Winter mornings are near freezing; bring gloves, a hat and a warm jacket for dawn sessions.

  • Leopards live in both areas; stay with your guide on dawn and dusk walks.

Questions

About this trip

How many bird species can I expect on this trip?

It depends on season, weather and effort, but a keen birder can expect a good list of Himalayan forest species over five guided sessions. We do not promise numbers or particular birds.

What is the best season for birding in Kumaon?

November to May. Winter brings altitudinal migrants to Sattal's streams; March to May brings breeding calls and plumage in Binsar. Avoid the monsoon.

Is this trip suitable for beginners?

Yes. Guides help beginners find and identify birds, and the walks are easy to moderate. Bring binoculars; a field guide or app helps.

Do the guides use playback?

We prefer guides who do not, and ask them to avoid it with sensitive species. Tell us your preference and we will brief the guide.

Can I add Pangot to this trip?

Yes. Pangot, near Nainital, is another known birding area and can be added as a day trip from Sattal or with an extra night. Ask us when booking.

What camera gear should I bring?

A telephoto lens of 400 mm or more helps in forest. Bring spare batteries and memory cards, as power at Binsar is limited, and a rain cover.

Why stay at the KMVN rest house in Binsar?

It sits inside the sanctuary near the best oak forest and Zero Point, so you can be birding at first light. Rooms are simple, but the location is ideal.

Can a non-birding partner enjoy this trip?

Yes, if they like forest walks, views and quiet. Sattal has lakes and the Christian Ashram; Binsar has Zero Point and the museum.

What is the price per person for a solo birder?

Solo travellers pay a single supplement for rooms and car. Expect roughly 1.5 times the twin-share price; we quote exactly when you enquire.
