A morning kayak on Naukuchiatal
Naukuchiatal, the lake of nine corners, is 4 km beyond Bhimtal and quieter than any lake near Nainital. A morning kayak along its wooded edges, followed by tea on the shore, is a gentle adventure for teenagers and adults alike.
The lake's name comes from its nine corners, and local belief says that seeing all nine at once brings good luck, though the shape makes that hard from any one point. It lies slightly lower than Bhimtal and is surrounded by oak and pine slopes with a few resorts and homes. In the morning the water is calm and the light is soft.
Single and double kayaks are hired from operators on the shore. Check that life jackets fit and are buckled, and stay within the area the operator shows you. Beginners pick it up in a few minutes; the lake has no current. Rowing and pedal boats are also available for those who prefer to sit.
In the dry months, some operators also sell tandem paragliding from the ridge above the lake. If you try it, ask about the pilot's licence and insurance, and fly only in calm morning conditions. Afterwards, walk part of the shoreline path and watch for kingfishers and cormorants, which are common here.

Yes, in calm conditions with a properly fitted life jacket. The lake has no current and operators show you where to paddle. Avoid windy afternoons and stay near the shore if you are not a confident swimmer.
Why is it called Naukuchiatal?
The name means the lake of nine corners, after its irregular shape. Local belief holds that seeing all nine corners at once brings good fortune.
