Kalimpong cactus and orchid nursery visit
Tour two or three of Kalimpong's family-run nurseries, which grow cacti, succulents, orchids, gladioli and bulbs for buyers across India, and learn why this ridge town became a flower town after the Tibet trade ended.
Horticulture is one of Kalimpong's mainstays. The town's flower market is known for its wide range of orchids, and its nurseries export Himalayan-grown bulbs, tubers and rhizomes. Much of this grew up after 1962, when the closure of the Jelep La ended the Tibet trade and families looked for new ways to make a living from the ridge's mild climate.
Cactus nurseries are the best known with visitors. Greenhouses hold thousands of cacti and succulents in rows of pots, from tiny globes to tall columns, many raised from seed here. Orchid growers keep both native Himalayan species and hybrids. Owners or staff usually walk you through and explain how plants are propagated and shipped.
Ask before touching plants or taking cuttings, and never collect wild orchids from forests, which is illegal. Most nurseries sell small plants; check whether your home state allows them in luggage. Spring brings gladioli and orchid blooms, while winter is quiet but cacti are always on display.
