Most budget trips stop at Darjeeling. This one crosses the Teesta to Kalimpong and climbs into the forests on the far side, where homestays cost less and the mountains are just as close. It costs about ₹17,500 per person on the ground for six nights, using shared jeeps for every transfer except the short hop between Lava and Rishyap.

Expect simple rooms. The forest cottages at Lava are cold and basic, and Rishyap homestays may have shared bathrooms and a bucket of hot water rather than a geyser. Shared jeeps leave when full and mostly in the morning, so days start early. In return you get the quiet forest end of the hive, home-cooked food and sunrise views from 2,590 m without paying hotel prices.

Highlights

  • Zang Dhok Palri Phodang on Durpin Hill and Kalimpong's nurseries
  • The Wednesday or Saturday haat in Kalimpong
  • Forest cottages at Lava, gateway to Neora Valley National Park
  • Kangchenjunga from Tiffindara above Rishyap

Questions

About this trip

How much does this 6-night Darjeeling and Kalimpong trip cost?

About ₹17,500 per person on the ground for twin sharing, covering budget rooms with breakfast and dinner on most days, shared jeeps, a short reserved car, Tiger Hill and the diesel joy ride. Add train fares to NJP and about ₹300–600 a day for lunches. Prices are indicative 2026.

Are there shared jeeps between Darjeeling and Kalimpong?

Yes. Shared jeeps leave the motor stand below Chowk Bazaar in Darjeeling, mostly in the morning, for about ₹200–300 a seat, and take 2.5–3 hours via Teesta Bazaar. If none is filling, take one towards Teesta Bazaar and change.

What are the rooms like at Lava and Rishyap?

Simple. Lava's WBFDC forest cottages have basic furniture, limited heating and a canteen. Rishyap homestays are family homes, some with attached bathrooms and hot water, some with shared toilets and hot water by the bucket. Blankets are heavy and food is home-cooked.

Can I visit Neora Valley National Park on this trip?

From October to May you can arrange a park permit, vehicle and guide at the Lava forest office for a short drive into the park, at extra cost. The park usually closes in the monsoon. Rules and fees change, so check current status before you travel.

Is this trip suitable for solo women travellers?

Yes, with normal care. Shared jeeps are routine for local women, and homestays are family homes. Lava and Rishyap are quiet villages; avoid walking forest roads alone after dark and tell your hosts your plans. Carry a charged phone, though signal can be weak.

When is the best time for Lava and Rishyap?

October to April, when the air is clear and Kangchenjunga is often visible at sunrise. October and November are the best months. December to February are very cold but clear. The monsoon brings leeches, fog and landslides, and the national park closes.

Do I need to book homestays in advance?

In October, November and the spring holidays, yes. Rishyap and Lava have limited rooms and many families have no website, so book through a known operator or by phone a few weeks ahead. Outside peak weeks you can often find a bed on arrival.

Is there mobile network and ATM access?

Darjeeling and Kalimpong have ATMs and good 4G. Lava has patchy network and few ATMs, and Rishyap has weak signal. Carry enough cash for the last three nights; many homestays also accept UPI when the network works.

Can I reverse the route or end in Kalimpong?

Yes. You can start with Kalimpong and the forest villages and end in Darjeeling, which suits travellers flying out of Bagdogra. Keep Rishyap for a clear-weather morning, and leave a spare half day for slow jeeps.
