Morgan House, Kalimpong (WBTDC)
A 1930s stone mansion built by the jute businessman George Morgan on Durpin Hill, now a WBTDC heritage lodge with a few rooms and cottages, lawns and views of the Kangchenjunga range, about 3 km from Kalimpong town.
Morgan House was built in the 1930s by George Morgan, an English jute businessman, as a country house on Durpin Hill above Kalimpong. Its ivy-covered stone walls, tall chimneys and sloping roofs make it one of the most photographed buildings in the hills. Today WBTDC runs it as a heritage tourism property, with a small number of rooms in the main house, cottages in the grounds and a restaurant. Another small heritage unit, Tashiding, sits within the same estate.
The house stands on around 16 acres about 3 km from the town centre, with lawns facing the Kangchenjunga range on clear days. Rooms in the main house have period character but simple fittings; cottages are newer. It is not a luxury hotel, but for atmosphere at a fair price it is hard to beat in Kalimpong. Book early through WBTDC for October–November and spring.
