What a day in Kumaon really costs
Kumaon is one of the cheapest parts of the Indian Himalaya to travel well. It is close to Delhi, has a railhead at its foot, runs on shared transport, and has no permit costs for the main towns. Most of the money you spend goes on three things: a bed, food, and seats in shared jeeps or buses.
Our saver estimate is ₹1,800–3,000 per person per day, sharing a room or sleeping in a dorm. That rises to ₹6,000–11,000 for comfort travel with a private car and good hotels, and to ₹22,000 or more for the hive's best small hotels. Prices below are indicative for 2026, rounded, and based on what travellers pay locally. Fares and room rates change with season and fuel prices, so check current status before you travel.
| Item | Typical cost (indicative 2026) |
|---|---|
| Hostel dorm bed, Mukteshwar or Kasar Devi | ₹500–900 a night |
| Budget guesthouse double | ₹1,200–2,500 a night |
| KMVN tourist rest house double | ₹2,000–5,000 a night |
| Kumaoni thali at a dhaba | ₹150–250 |
| Shared taxi seat, Nainital–Almora | ₹200–350 |
| Roadways bus, Almora–Jageshwar | ₹60–120 |
| Binsar sanctuary entry, Indian nationals | ₹150–250 |
Getting there for less
The biggest single saving is the overnight train. The Ranikhet Express and the Uttarakhand Sampark Kranti run from Delhi to Kathgodam overnight, and a sleeper berth costs a few hundred rupees, with 3AC usually under ₹1,000. You save a hotel night and arrive in the hills by early morning. The day Shatabdi is faster in daylight but costs more and uses a day. Coming back, the evening trains from Kathgodam reach Delhi early the next morning, so your last day in the hills is not lost.
Uttarakhand Roadways buses run from Delhi's Anand Vihar ISBT to Haldwani, Nainital and Almora. Ordinary buses are cheapest; air-conditioned Volvo services cost about twice as much. Haldwani, 6 km from Kathgodam, is the hub for KMOU buses and shared jeeps into the hills.
Flying to Pantnagar only makes sense if you find a cheap fare, as the airport is about 70 km from Nainital and a taxi from it costs more than the train ticket.
- Book train berths 30–60 days ahead for October, Diwali, Christmas and May weekends.
- Ask for the window seat on the left side of shared jeeps going up from Kathgodam: it faces the valley, not the rock wall.
- Shared jeeps leave when full; arrive at the stand early in the morning when most depart.
Beds: hostels, KMVN and homestays
Kumaon has a good spread of cheap beds. Zostel runs a hostel in the orchards outside Mukteshwar, and Kasar Devi above Almora has several hostels, including The Hosteller, plus many guesthouses with dorms. Dorm beds here cost ₹500–900; private hostel rooms ₹2,000–4,000.
Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), the state tourism corporation, runs tourist rest houses across the hills. They are plain, sometimes tired, but often on the best ridge in town. The rest houses at Binsar, inside the sanctuary, and at Kausani, facing Trishul, are the obvious picks. Book them on the official KMVN website, since many third-party listings mark up rates.
In Munsiyari, Chaukori and the villages around Binsar, family homestays charge ₹1,200–2,500 per person with dinner and breakfast. They are the best value in the hive, because meals are home-cooked and you learn more about local life than in any hotel.
For long stays, ask for a weekly or monthly rate. Many guesthouses on the Kasar Devi road and around Mukteshwar give remote workers and writers a clear discount for a week or more outside October and New Year, especially if you skip daily cleaning. Hot water by bucket or geyser, heaters in winter and Wi-Fi strength vary a lot at this price, so ask before you pay.
Eating well for ₹400–700 a day
Kumaoni food is cheap and filling. A thali of rice, dal, a seasonal vegetable, roti and raita costs ₹150–250 in a dhaba. Ask for bhatt ki churkani, the black soybean curry, or aloo ke gutke, spiced potatoes, which are local staples rather than tourist dishes. Breakfast of paratha and tea costs ₹80–150 almost everywhere.
Hotel buffets in Nainital can cost four times as much for less local food. In Almora, buy bal mithai and singori by weight in Lal Bazaar rather than in gift boxes at highway stops. In May and June, kafal berries sold by roadside children cost little and are worth trying.
Carry a refillable bottle. Many guesthouses will refill it with filtered water, which saves money and plastic.
A sample 5-night saver plan and budget
This is the route of our own 5-night saver trip: Almora, Binsar and Jageshwar, starting and ending at Kathgodam. It suits first-timers and students who want temples, forest and views without long days.
Day 1, shared taxi from Kathgodam to Almora. Day 2, Kasar Devi and the Lal Bazaar. Day 3, shared jeep and a short cab leg into Binsar for a night at the KMVN rest house. Day 4, sunrise at Zero Point, then to Jageshwar. Day 5, the temple group and the museum. Day 6, back to Kathgodam via Almora.
The figures assume two people sharing rooms and the cheapest sensible transport, but not the very cheapest bed in every town. Travelling alone adds roughly ₹2,000–3,500 to the total, mostly in room costs. Dorm-only travellers can bring the total closer to ₹11,000.
| Cost line | 5 nights, per person |
|---|---|
| Beds (shared doubles and KMVN, twin share) | ₹6,000–8,500 |
| Food, 3 meals a day | ₹2,500–3,500 |
| Shared taxis, jeeps and two short cab legs | ₹2,500–4,000 |
| Binsar entry and a guide share | ₹700–1,200 |
| Total from Kathgodam | ₹13,000–18,000 |
Where travellers overspend
The common budget mistakes in Kumaon are about timing and taxis rather than hotels.
- Going to Nainital on long weekends or from mid-May to mid-June, when room rates on the Mall can double and traffic jams eat hours. Stay at Bhimtal or Bhowali instead and visit Nainital for the day.
- Hiring a private cab for every leg. A Kathgodam–Almora cab costs ₹3,000–4,000; a shared taxi seat costs a fraction of that and takes about the same time.
- Trying to reach Munsiyari in a short trip. It is 9–11 hours from Kathgodam; going for two nights means paying for two long road days to see one view.
- Buying bottled water all day. A filter bottle pays for itself within a week.
- Booking KMVN through resellers rather than the official site.
Money, ATMs and network
ATMs work in Haldwani, Nainital, Almora, Ranikhet, Bageshwar and Munsiyari, but can run dry on holidays. Carry cash for two or three days, especially for Binsar, Jageshwar and village homestays. UPI is accepted by many shops and guesthouses in towns, less so by shared-jeep drivers and village stays.
Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in towns. Expect weak or no signal inside Binsar and on parts of the Thal–Munsiyari road, so download maps and train tickets before you go.
