Mukteshwar

Orchards, cliffs and a Shiva temple on a 2,171 m ridge

Mukteshwar is a ridge-top village at 2,171 m, 51 km from Nainital, known for its Shiva temple, the Chauli ki Jali cliffs, apple and apricot orchards around Ramgarh and long snow views. It suits workations, couples and slow weekends. Two to three nights is right, and it is one of the likelier places in Kumaon to see snow.

Mukteshwar takes its name from the Mukteshwar Dham, a small Shiva temple about 350 years old at the highest point of the ridge. Beside it, the rock drops away in overhangs locals call Chauli ki Jali, used today for rappelling and for watching the sun set over the Kosi valley. Below the ridge, deodar and oak forest runs down to orchards and the villages of Satkhol, Sitla and Dhanachuli.

The town grew around science, not tourism. In 1893 the British moved a bacteriological laboratory here from Pune to make serum against cattle plague, choosing the cold, isolated ridge on purpose. It became the Indian Veterinary Research Institute campus that still fills the top of the hill. Jim Corbett knew the place as Muktesar, the name many locals use, and wrote about a man-eating tiger here.

Today Mukteshwar is popular with Delhi travellers who want a quieter base than Nainital, and with remote workers who stay a week or more. The road from Bhowali passes through Ramgarh, the fruit belt of Kumaon, where Rabindranath Tagore and the Hindi poet Mahadevi Verma both spent time. From November to February, Mukteshwar gets cold enough for frost most nights and snow on some days.

What to do in Mukteshwar

Mukteshwar Dham at sunrise

Climb the stone steps from the IVRI gate area to the small Shiva temple at the top of the ridge. At dawn on a clear winter morning the snow peaks line the north. The temple is simple and old; remove shoes and keep voices low.

Sunset from Chauli ki Jali

The overhanging cliffs beside the temple face west over the valley. They are the town's sunset point and its rappelling site. There are no railings in places, so stay well back from the edge, especially with children.

Ramgarh's orchards

On the drive in, Ramgarh's slopes are planted with apple, apricot, plum and peach. In June and July roadside stalls sell fruit and homemade jams. Neemrana's Ramgarh Bungalows grows its own fruit for jam here.

Village walks to Satkhol and Sitla

Forest paths link Mukteshwar to villages on nearby spurs. A half-day walk passes terraced fields, naulas and small temples. Ask your stay for the current trail, as some paths have been cut by new roads.

Snow in winter

At 2,171 m, Mukteshwar is one of the likelier places near Delhi to get snow, usually between late December and February after a western disturbance. Roads can be slippery for a day; carry chains or wait for the plough.

Mukteshwar's ridge carries orchards of a regional station of the Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture alongside the veterinary institute, part of why the area grows apples, apricots and plums.

Questions

Mukteshwar, answered

Is Mukteshwar better than Nainital?

For a quiet stay, yes. Mukteshwar is a ridge village with forest walks, orchards and wide snow views, and far fewer crowds. Nainital has the lake, shops and more to see. Many travellers spend one night in Nainital and two or three in Mukteshwar.

Does it snow in Mukteshwar?

Snow falls in most winters, usually on a few days between late December and February after a western disturbance. It is not guaranteed. Roads can be slippery or closed for a day; check current status before you travel.

How do I reach Mukteshwar from Kathgodam?

Take a shared taxi to Bhowali and another to Mukteshwar, or hire a private taxi for ₹2,500–3,500. The 70 km drive via Bhowali and Ramgarh takes 2.5–3 hours.

Is Mukteshwar good for a workation?

Yes, many remote workers stay a week or more at Zostel and homestays. Jio and Airtel 4G work in most of the village, and some stays have fibre broadband. Ask about power backup before booking, since storms can cut supply.

How many days are enough for Mukteshwar?

Two nights covers the temple, Chauli ki Jali, a village walk and Ramgarh. Stay longer for rest or remote work. Mukteshwar pairs well with Nainital or Bhimtal on a five-night trip.

What is the weather in Mukteshwar in December?

Days are about 8–14 °C and nights fall below freezing, with frost most mornings. Skies are usually clear, giving good snow views. Snow is possible late in the month. Carry thermals and a down jacket.

What does a budget trip to Mukteshwar cost?

A hostel bed costs ₹600–1,000 a night, a homestay double ₹2,000–3,500, meals ₹400–600 a day, and shared taxis from Bhowali ₹150–250. Two nights from Kathgodam can cost under ₹5,000 per person.

Is Mukteshwar safe for solo travellers?

Yes, it is quiet and friendly, and the hostel scene is used to solo guests. The main risks are leopards and dark roads at night, so do not walk alone after dark and carry a torch.

Can I visit the IVRI campus in Mukteshwar?

IVRI is a working government research institute. The temple steps start near it, but entry to buildings and labs is restricted. A small museum has been open to visitors at times; ask at the gate and follow staff instructions.
