Saga Dawa
Saga Dawa is the holiest month of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar, honouring the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing. On its full moon, Gangtok holds a procession of monks carrying holy texts through the city, and Buddhists across Sikkim visit monasteries and make offerings.
Saga Dawa falls in the fourth month of the Tibetan calendar, and its full moon day, usually in May or June, is the most important. Buddhists believe merit earned during this month is multiplied, so many people give to charity, avoid eating meat and visit monasteries to pray and light butter lamps.
In Gangtok, monks from local monasteries lead a procession through the city carrying holy books, accompanied by horns, drums and devotees. The procession moves through the main streets, and people come out to receive blessings. Monasteries across the state, including Rumtek and those around Ravangla and Pelling, hold prayers and rituals.
For visitors, Saga Dawa coincides with the busy May and early June season and pre-monsoon weather. The procession is a public event; watch from the roadside and avoid blocking the route. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check current status before you travel.
Tips for the day
- Ask your hotel the date and route of the Gangtok procession in advance.
- Watch from a step or roadside rather than joining unless invited.
- Carry a light rain jacket; showers are common in late May and June.
