Ways to save in Garhwal
- Take the 5 am UTC or GMOU buses from Rishikesh ISBT or the GMOU yard instead of a private taxi; Rishikesh to Sonprayag costs ₹500–800 a seat against ₹7,000–9,000 for a car.
- Book GMVN rest house dorms at Badrinath, Ghangaria, Gangotri and Uttarkashi as soon as yatra dates are fixed; they fill fast in May and June.
- Travel in the second half of September or October, when hotel rates on the yatra road drop by a third or more after the monsoon.
- Walk to Kedarnath if you are fit and acclimatised; a return pony costs several thousand rupees and a helicopter seat ₹6,000–13,000 return.
- Eat thalis at gurdwaras and dhabas; the langar at Govindghat and Ghangaria gurdwaras is free and open to all.
- Draw cash in Rishikesh, Srinagar, Uttarkashi or Joshimath; ATMs above these towns run dry in peak weeks and many dhabas take only cash or UPI with weak signal.
