The Valley of Flowers is one of the cheapest great walks in the Himalaya. There are no permits beyond the park ticket, the trail is paved to Ghangaria, and the gurdwaras along the way feed every walker free. What costs money is time: the bus from Rishikesh to Joshimath takes most of a day, and the walk in and out needs two more. We give the valley three nights so a day of rain does not end the trip.

This is a saver trip and honest about it. You sleep in a hostel dorm in Rishikesh, a GMVN rest house or simple lodge at Ghangaria with bucket hot water, and a dharamshala or GMVN room at Badrinath. Buses leave at 4–5 am and are crowded in July. In return, you see the valley at peak bloom for under ₹20,000, and walk to a Sikh shrine at 4,600 m.

Highlights

  • A full day in the Valley of Flowers at peak monsoon bloom
  • The 6 km climb to Hemkund Sahib and its glacial lake at about 4,600 m
  • Free langar at the Govindghat and Ghangaria gurdwaras
  • Mana village, Bhim Pul and the Saraswati gorge above Badrinath
  • Five river confluences seen from the bus window on the Alaknanda road

About Auli & Joshimath
8Day

Bus back to Rishikesh

2,800 m≈ 265 km · 9–10 hMeals: Breakfast

Take the early bus from Joshimath to Rishikesh, arriving by evening, in time for an overnight bus or a late train from Haridwar to Delhi. If you have an extra day, we strongly suggest it: landslides in July and August can hold buses for hours, and it is far better to spend a night in Rishikesh than to miss a train.

Questions

About this trip

How much does a Valley of Flowers trip cost on a budget?

About ₹18,000–22,000 per person for 7 nights from Rishikesh, using buses, shared jeeps, dorms and GMVN rooms and eating at dhabas. Ponies, porters and a helicopter seat add several thousand rupees. Travel to Rishikesh is extra.

What is the best time to see the Valley of Flowers?

Mid-July to mid-August, when most species are in bloom. June has fewer flowers but drier trails; September is clearer with fading flowers. The valley is usually open from 1 June to 31 October.

Can I stay overnight inside the Valley of Flowers?

No. Camping and overnight stays inside the national park are not allowed. Everyone stays at Ghangaria, about 3–4 km from the valley entrance, and walks in each day.

How difficult is the Hemkund Sahib climb?

It is about 6 km each way, climbing around 1,500 m to about 4,600 m on a paved path. It is steep and the air is thin. Fit walkers take 3–5 hours up. Ponies and porters are available.

Do I need registration for the Valley of Flowers?

You need the park entry permit, sold at the forest check post above Ghangaria. Hemkund Sahib pilgrims also register on the Uttarakhand tourism portal, which is checked on the road. Check current status before you travel.

Is the Valley of Flowers safe in monsoon?

The trail is well used and paved, but rain, slippery stones and landslides on the road are real risks. Follow local advice, avoid walking in heavy rain and keep a spare day for delays.

Is there mobile network at Ghangaria?

There is limited signal from some networks at Govindghat and Ghangaria, often weak and patchy. There is no reliable data inside the valley. Tell family your plan before leaving Joshimath.

Can a solo woman do this trip?

Yes, many do, especially in July and August when the trail is busy with pilgrims and walkers. Book rooms in advance, travel in daylight and use registered porters and ponies from official counters.

Is there an ATM at Ghangaria?

Do not count on one. Draw cash in Rishikesh or Joshimath. Lodges and dhabas at Ghangaria may take UPI, but signal is weak, so carry enough cash for rooms, porters and food.
