Phobjikha valley farmhouse stays
Registered farmhouse stays scattered around the Phobjikha valley floor and Gangtey village, a short walk from the crane marsh. Wood stoves, potato and buckwheat cooking and hot stone baths, at a fraction of the valley's lodge prices.
Phobjikha has a handful of luxury lodges, but most of the valley's beds are in farmhouses. Families who farm potatoes, turnips and buckwheat have converted one or two rooms for guests. Rooms are plain, with thick quilts and a bukhari stove; at 3,000 m, December nights fall to about −5 °C, so warmth matters more than decor. Bathrooms range from shared to simple attached.
Evenings are spent by the kitchen fire with kewa datshi, red rice and khuli. Many homes offer a hot stone bath. In crane season, mid-November to January, some houses are within sight of the marsh. Book early for the Black-necked Crane Festival on 11 November, when the valley fills. Your licensed operator books registered houses.
Why we use it
- Sleep a short walk from the crane marsh
- Hot stone baths and wood-stove kitchens
- Far cheaper than the valley's lodges

Questions
About Phobjikha valley farmhouse stays
Are Phobjikha farmhouses warm in winter?
Rooms have wood stoves or heaters and thick quilts, but corridors and bathrooms are cold. Bring thermals, a warm hat and socks for night. The valley drops to about −5 °C in December.
Can I see cranes from a homestay?
From some houses on the valley edge, yes, especially early morning. For closer and guided viewing, go to the RSPN crane centre viewpoints.
Is electricity reliable in Phobjikha?
The valley is on the national grid via underground cable, laid to protect the cranes. Short power cuts happen; carry a torch and a power bank.
