The Elgin Nor-Khill
Built in 1932 as the royal guest house of the Chogyal of Sikkim, the Nor-Khill is Gangtok's classic heritage hotel, below Paljor Stadium. Period furniture, old photographs and gardens make it the city's most characterful stay.
The Nor-Khill was built in 1932 as a guest house for visitors to the Sikkim royal court, and hosted dignitaries in the kingdom's later decades. It is now run by Elgin Hotels, a group with heritage properties in Darjeeling and Sikkim. The building keeps its period character, with carpets, woodwork and photographs from the royal era.
It sits on a quiet road below Paljor Stadium, close to the centre but away from traffic. Rooms vary in size and outlook; ask for one with garden or valley views. Meals are usually included in Elgin's room plans. It is a fine choice for signature trips that want history rather than a modern resort.

Gangtok
Gangtok is Sikkim's capital, spread along a ridge at about 1,650 m above the Ranikhola valley. It has been the seat of government since 1894. Use it as the base for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim permits, and give it two days of its own for MG Marg, its monasteries and the Tibetology institute.
