Village in Sikkim
The Lachenpa village on the road to Gurudongmar
Lachen is a village at about 2,750 m on the Lachen Chu in North Sikkim, the overnight stop before the pre-dawn drive to Gurudongmar Lake. It is home to the Lachenpa community and governed in part by its Dzumsa. Reached on a permit tour from Gangtok; road access has been disrupted since 2023, so check current status before you travel.
Lachen lies on a shelf above the Lachen Chu, about 25 km upriver from Chungthang, in a valley that narrows and steepens as it heads north towards Tibet. Its wooden houses and prayer flags spread across the slope, with the monastery above. Beyond the village, the road climbs to Thangu at about 3,900 m and then onto the high, bare plateau leading to Gurudongmar.
The Lachenpas are a Bhutia community who traditionally herded yaks and traded across the passes. Like Lachung, Lachen governs its local affairs through the Dzumsa, which sets rules on grazing, festivals and, at times, tourism. Lachen's Dzumsa has been firm about controlling numbers and conduct, and visitors are expected to follow its rules.
Most travellers spend one night in Lachen before leaving at about 4 am for Gurudongmar, then drive back down to Lachung or Gangtok. Access has been difficult since the October 2023 floods washed away roads and bridges near Chungthang, and further landslides have closed the road for long periods. Ask your agency what is open before you plan.
The village gompa sits on the slope above the main road, a Nyingma monastery with painted walls and a quiet courtyard. Morning prayers are the best time to visit.
Lachen is the last village with tourist stays before Gurudongmar Lake, 65 km or so further north. Sleeping here at 2,750 m before the drive helps with acclimatisation.
Above Lachen, Thangu at about 3,900 m is a small settlement where tours stop for breakfast. Nearby, the Chopta valley opens into wide meadows with views of high peaks.
Simple family homestays offer warm meals and an insight into village life, often around a kitchen stove. They are among the warmest places to sleep in the valley.
Lachen is also the starting point for the trek towards Green Lake and the Zemu glacier at the foot of Kangchenjunga, inside Khangchendzonga National Park. It needs special permits and a registered guide.
