Walk to Phugtal, the cave monastery
Drive from Padum up the Lungnak valley to the road end, then walk along the gorge to Phugtal, a monastery built around a cave high on a cliff. It is one of the most remarkable buildings in the Himalaya.
Phugtal lies in the Lungnak gorge south-east of Padum. The road has been extended up the valley in recent years, so the walk from the road end is now a few hours each way rather than a multi-day trek; ask in Padum how far vehicles reach this season.
The path follows the river, crosses a bridge and climbs gently. Then you round a bend and see the monastery: a cave mouth high on the cliff, with monks' cells and temples stacked below it like a honeycomb, all whitewashed against the brown rock. A spring inside the cave supplies water.
Go with a local guide, start early, carry water, snacks and sun protection, and allow time to sit quietly in the cave temple. Some travellers stay overnight in a village homestay near the monastery to avoid rushing. This is a walk for people already acclimatised to Padum.

Questions
Before you book
How long is the walk to Phugtal?
It depends on how far the road reaches. In recent seasons the walk from the road end has been a few hours each way on a mostly gentle path along the gorge. Ask in Padum before you go, and allow a full day. Road extensions change the distance; check current status before you travel.
Is the Phugtal walk suitable for beginners?
Yes, for fit beginners who are already acclimatised. The path is not technical but is at about 3,850 m, exposed to sun and with a final steep climb to the cave. Walk slowly, drink water and carry snacks. People with heart or lung conditions should talk to their doctor first.
Can I stay overnight near Phugtal?
A few village homestays and simple campsites near the monastery and in nearby villages host trekkers in summer, with basic rooms and shared toilets. Arrange through a Padum guide or agency. Carry a sleeping bag liner and cash.
