Pensi La and the Drang Drung glacier
The pass between the Suru valley and Zanskar, at about 4,400 m, looks straight onto the Drang Drung glacier, a long curving river of ice. Stop at the viewpoint on the Zanskar side, then drop into the Stod valley.
Pensi La is the gateway to Zanskar. The road climbs from the wide Rangdum plain past small lakes, often with marmots on the slopes, to the top of the pass at about 4,400 m. On the far side, the view opens onto the Drang Drung glacier, sweeping down from the peaks in a long curve and ending in grey moraine.
The glacier is the source of the Stod river, which you follow all the way down to Padum. Stop at the viewpoint a short way below the pass on the Zanskar side, where most drivers pull in. Stay 15–20 minutes, not longer: you are well above your sleeping height.
Mornings give the clearest views before clouds build. If you are coming from Rangdum, leave by 7 am. Carry warm layers, sunglasses and water, and keep to the road edge; the moraine is loose and dangerous.

Questions
Before you book
How high is Pensi La?
Pensi La is about 4,400 m, the highest point on the Kargil–Padum road. It is lower than Khardung La or Chang La, but still high enough to cause headaches if you are not acclimatised. Spend nights in Kargil and Rangdum, or in Leh, before crossing it.
Can I walk on the Drang Drung glacier?
Not safely without mountaineering experience and gear. The glacier has crevasses and the moraine is loose. Enjoy it from the viewpoints on the road. Organised glacier walks, where offered, should only be done with qualified local guides.
When is Pensi La open?
Pensi La is usually open from about June to October, depending on snow. Early and late in the season, snow and ice can block or slow the road. Check current status before you travel and carry warm clothes even in summer.
