Pine meadows on the Doodh Ganga, a walk from Nilnag lake
Yusmarg is a hill station of meadows and pine forest at 2,396 m on the Doodh Ganga river, about 50 km south-west of Srinagar in Budgam district. Walk 4 km to the blue Nilnag lake, picnic by the river and stop at the Charar-e-Sharief shrine on the way. Day trip or one quiet night.
Yusmarg sits on a long, sloping meadow in the western part of Budgam district, at 2,396 m, with dense pine and fir forest on three sides and the Doodh Ganga river cutting below it. The Pir Panjal rises to the south-west, with Sunset Peak among the summits trekkers aim for. It feels older and quieter than Gulmarg: fewer hotels, more cattle, and long views down to the valley.
The road from Srinagar passes through Budgam and Charar-e-Sharief, a town 18 km before Yusmarg that is home to the shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, Kashmir's most revered Sufi saint. Many Kashmiri families combine the two in a day. Above the meadow, a forest trail leads to Nilnag, a small lake known for its deep blue water.
Facilities are basic. JKTDC runs huts on the meadow, there are a few guesthouses and tea stalls, and pony owners offer rides to Nilnag and the river. In winter the meadow is under snow, and access depends on clearance. From April to October, Yusmarg is a fine break from the busier circuits.
A 4 km forest trail, or a pony ride, leads to Nilnag, a small lake ringed by pine and known for its blue water. Go in the morning when the surface is still and reflections are clear.
Below the meadow, the Doodh Ganga, a tributary of the Jhelum, runs white over rocks through pine forest. A short walk down from the meadow leads to picnic spots on its banks.
The shrine of Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, Nund Rishi, at Charar-e-Sharief, 18 km before Yusmarg, is one of Kashmir's most important Sufi sites. Dress modestly and cover your head.
A 10 km trek leads from Yusmarg to the Sang-e-Safed valley and a lake that stays mostly covered with ice even in summer. Go with a local guide as a long day or overnight trip.
Stay a night in a JKTDC hut for a meadow with almost no traffic after 5 pm, clear skies for stars and cattle bells at dawn. Rooms are basic but warm with extra blankets.

Yes, in winter from about December to March, but road access depends on snow clearance and facilities are very limited. Spring visitors in April may see snow on the forest edges and peaks.
Both are calm Budgam meadows. Yusmarg has the Nilnag lake walk and the Charar-e-Sharief shrine on the way; Doodhpathri has a broader river and more open meadows. With one day, choose by mood; with two, see both.
