Norbulingka was set up in the late 1980s to keep traditional Tibetan arts alive in exile, and it takes its name from the Dalai Lama's old summer palace in Lhasa. The campus near Sidhpur, about 14 km below McLeodganj, is laid out with small bridges, streams and Japanese-style gardens. Walk through the workshops and you can watch thangka painters grind mineral pigments, woodcarvers cut altar panels and metalworkers beat copper into statues.

The temple on site has a large gilded Buddha and wall paintings of the lineage of the Dalai Lamas. There is also a doll museum showing Tibetan regional dress. The shop sells work made on site, at fixed prices, and the café is good for lunch. Chonor House, the hotel in McLeodganj, was built and is run by the same institute.

On the way back, stop at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives, founded by the 14th Dalai Lama in 1970, which holds manuscripts, thangkas and a small museum. It also runs courses in Tibetan language and Buddhist philosophy that visitors can join. Both places keep weekday hours and close on some holidays, so check current status before you travel.
