Sunrise over the Kinnaur Kailash range

Wake before dawn and watch first light reach the Kinnaur Kailash range across the Sutlej, its summit around 6,050 m. Find the rock pinnacle worshipped as Shiva's lingam with binoculars, then walk the quiet village lanes as Kalpa wakes up.

Kalpa faces east across the Sutlej gorge to the Kinnaur Kailash range, with Jorkanden and the Kailash peak rising more than 3,000 m above the village. On clear mornings the first sun touches the summits orange, then gold, while the valley below is still in shadow. The best light lasts about 20 minutes. Spring and autumn give the clearest mornings; monsoon cloud often hides the peaks in July and August.

On the range's slopes stands a tall rock pinnacle that Kinnauris and Hindu pilgrims worship as a Shiva lingam. It is said to change colour through the day. Pilgrims walk the Kinnaur Kailash parikrama, a circuit of several days over high ground, especially around the August pilgrimage season. That trek needs acclimatisation, a guide and good fitness.

After sunrise, walk through the old village to the Narayan-Nagini temple and the small Buddhist temple nearby, both in active use. Families will be heading to orchards and cattle sheds. Carry a warm jacket; mornings at almost 3,000 m are cold even in May, often near freezing in October. A thermos of tea from your homestay helps.

Questions

Before you book

When is the best time to see Kinnaur Kailash from Kalpa?

From late September to November and from April to June, when skies are clearest. Mornings are best; clouds often build by afternoon. In July and August monsoon cloud usually hides the peaks. In winter the view is clear but cold and some hotels close.

What is the Shivling on Kinnaur Kailash?

A natural rock pinnacle about 24 m tall on the slopes of the Kinnaur Kailash range, worshipped as a lingam of Shiva. It is visible from Kalpa with binoculars and is the goal of the Kinnaur Kailash parikrama pilgrimage.

Can I trek to the Kinnaur Kailash Shivling?

Yes, as a demanding pilgrimage trek of several days, usually from the Tangling side, crossing high and steep ground. It needs fitness, acclimatisation and a local guide or registered group, and it is mainly done in summer. Talk to your doctor and check current status before you travel.
