Sunrise walk to George Everest's house

Drive or walk to Park Estate, west of Mussoorie, where the Surveyor-General who gave his name to the world's highest peak lived and worked. The stone house sits on an open ridge with the Doon Valley on one side and the Aglar valley and snow peaks on the other.

George Everest was Surveyor-General of India from 1830 to 1843 and led the Great Trigonometric Survey through its later years. He wanted the survey's office in Mussoorie; Dehradun became the compromise, and the Survey of India is still headquartered there. At Park Estate, about 6 km west of Library Chowk near Hathipaon, he built the house and laboratory whose remains you walk to.

The site was restored by the state tourism authorities in recent years, with paths, signboards and a small entry fee; check current status before you travel. The last stretch is a gentle walk across grass to the house, a long, low stone building on the crest. From the ridge you look south over the Doon Valley and north across the Aglar valley to the snow peaks on clear mornings.

Sunrise is best, when the valley is full of cloud and the peaks turn pink. Carry a jacket: the ridge is exposed and windy, and winter mornings are below freezing. The road beyond Hathipaon is narrow; a small car or taxi is easier than a large SUV. There is little food at the site, so take tea and snacks.

Questions

Before you book

How far is George Everest's house from Mussoorie?

About 6 km west of Library Chowk, past Hathipaon, roughly 20–30 minutes by taxi on a narrow road. Fit walkers can hike from Library in 1.5–2 hours. A return taxi with waiting time costs about ₹800–1,200.

Is there an entry fee at George Everest's house?

After restoration, the site charges an entry fee and sometimes a vehicle fee. Amounts change; check current status before you travel. Paragliding and other activities may be offered nearby by private operators.

Did George Everest climb Mount Everest?

No. Everest was a surveyor and never saw the peak. It was named after him in 1865 by the Royal Geographical Society on the suggestion of his successor, Andrew Waugh, reportedly against Everest's own wishes.
