Takdah Orchid Centre and forest trail
Walk a forest trail of pine and cryptomeria from Tinchuley to the government orchid centre at Takdah, where rare Himalayan orchids are grown under shade, then return through the old cantonment lanes.
The orchid centre at Takdah cultivates a range of Himalayan orchids, including species that are rare in the wild. It is one of the main reasons visitors stop here. Greenhouses and shade houses hold plants on benches and mounted on bark, and staff can sometimes tell you which species is which.
The best time to visit is February to April, when most orchids flower. At other times you see leaves and pseudobulbs rather than blooms, though a few species flower in autumn. From Tinchuley, a trail through pine and cryptomeria forest leads to the centre in about 45 minutes; your homestay can point you to the start.
Never touch or remove plants, and remember that collecting wild orchids in India is illegal. Opening hours vary; go in the morning and ask locally first. Combine the visit with a walk past the old cantonment buildings on the way back.

Questions
Before you book
When is the Takdah Orchid Centre open?
It usually opens in the daytime, with flowering at its best from February to April. Hours and access change, and it may close on holidays. Ask your homestay and check current status before you travel.
Can I buy orchids at Takdah?
Sales depend on the centre's rules at the time and are not guaranteed. Never buy orchids collected from the wild, which is illegal. Kalimpong's nurseries are a better place to buy legally propagated plants.
How long is the trail from Tinchuley to the orchid centre?
About 45 minutes each way on a forest trail through pine and cryptomeria. It is mostly gentle with some uneven sections. Wear shoes with grip, especially after rain.
