Takdah was a British cantonment before 1947, a summer posting for senior officers from across India. The British laid out roads along the spur, planted cedar and pine, and built bungalows, barracks and a club. After independence the cantonment was abandoned, and for years the forest crept over it. Families have resettled the area more recently.

A heritage walk takes in the bungalows, several now restored as homestays, and the old club house about a kilometre from the town, standing empty among tall cedars. Look at the stone foundations, chimneys and drains; much of the engineering still works. Respect private property and do not enter buildings without permission.

End at the main junction, where a weekly market draws people from surrounding villages to buy and sell vegetables, clothes and household goods. Market day is usually Thursday; check locally. A guide from the village brings the stories to life and supports the local economy.

Questions

Before you book

Can I go inside the old club house at Takdah?

The club house is old and not maintained as a museum. View it from outside and do not enter if it is closed or unsafe. Some land around it may be private; ask locally.

Which day is the Takdah market?

The weekly market has traditionally been held on Thursdays, drawing villagers from around the area. Days can change; ask your homestay and check current status before you travel.

Do I need a guide for the heritage walk?

Not essential, but a local guide explains buildings and history you would otherwise miss and knows which properties welcome visitors. Half-day guides cost about ₹800–1,200.
