Guided forest walk around Rishyap
A half-day walk with a local guide through the oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest around Rishyap, on paths used by villagers towards the Lava side, with birds, mosses and mountain glimpses.
Rishyap sits in old forest on the ridge above the Lava road. Villagers use footpaths through it to reach fields, water sources and neighbouring settlements, and local guides lead visitors on these trails. A typical half-day walk covers 6–8 km with a few hundred metres of up and down, returning to the village for a late lunch.
The forest is mostly oak, rhododendron, magnolia and bamboo, heavy with moss and ferns. In spring the rhododendrons flower red and pink. Birds are common if you walk quietly: laughingthrushes in the undergrowth, minivets in the canopy, woodpeckers on dead trunks. Barking deer may bark from the slope below.
Walk only with a guide; trails are unmarked, and some cross into protected forest where rules apply. Carry water, a rain shell and snacks. In the wet months leeches are common, and paths are slippery. Respect the forest: no fires, no litter, and no picking of orchids or plants.

Questions
Before you book
Do I need a guide for walks around Rishyap?
Yes, we recommend one. Paths are unmarked, branch often and can be confusing in mist. Some routes enter protected forest where permission is needed. Local guides cost about ₹800–1,200 for a half day and know which trails are open.
How difficult is the forest walk?
Easy to moderate. Expect 6–8 km over 3–4 hours with some steep, uneven stretches. Anyone used to walking a few hours can manage it. Carry a stick if your knees are weak, and avoid the wet season.
Will I see wildlife on the walk?
Birds are almost certain on a quiet morning. Mammals such as barking deer, squirrels and, rarely, red panda or black bear live in these forests but are seldom seen. Follow your guide's advice if you see signs of bears.
