Changey Falls and Kolakham day trip
A half-day drive from Lava to Changey Falls, a tall forest waterfall reached by steps from the road, and on to Kolakham, a small village facing the Kangchenjunga range at the edge of Neora Valley.

From the parking point, steps lead down to the base of the falls; the climb back up takes 15–20 minutes and is the hardest part of the day. The falls are fullest after the monsoon, from September to November, and thinner by late spring.
From the falls, continue to Kolakham, a small village on a ridge at the edge of the national park. Homestays here face the Kangchenjunga range across the valleys, and the village is quieter than Lava. If you like birds, walk the road through the forest for an hour; it is often more productive than the busier roads near the bazaar.
Back in Lava by afternoon, rest before evening mist settles. This is an easy trip for families, but the steps at Changey need care, especially when wet. Leeches appear on forest edges in the wet months.

Questions
Before you book
How far is Changey Falls from Lava?
Changey Falls is a short drive from Lava, usually 30–45 minutes by car depending on the road, followed by a walk down steps from the road. Allow 2–3 hours for the round trip including time at the falls. Ask your stay about current road conditions.
Is Changey Falls suitable for seniors?
The descent and climb on steps are steep and can be slippery. Fit seniors manage with care and a stick; others may prefer to view from the upper part. Do not attempt it in heavy rain.
Can I stay in Kolakham?
Yes, Kolakham has several village homestays with views of the Kangchenjunga range, at about ₹1,500–2,500 per person with meals. It is quieter than Lava and suits birders. Book ahead in October–November and March–May.
