Kurseong station, DHR museum and bazaar walk
Walk the heart of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in its headquarters town: the dead-end station with its one-room museum, the reversing manoeuvre across the road, and the stretch of track that runs through Kurseong's crowded bazaar.
Kurseong has been a railway town since 1880, when the line from Siliguri opened as far as here, a year before it reached Darjeeling. The station got a new building and storage shed in 1896, and the railway's headquarters are still in town. Start at the station, where a shed and sidings sit beside the main line. Darjeeling-bound trains run into the dead-end station, then back out across the road junction to continue the climb.
Inside the station, a one-room museum keeps photographs of early locomotives, old tickets, tools and a wooden case of newspaper articles about the railway. It is small, and opening hours vary, but it gives a sense of how much the line meant to the hills. Ask staff about the day's train timings so you can see a departure.
Then walk the track uphill through the bazaar. Shops open straight onto the rails, vendors sell vegetables beside the sleepers, and when a train comes everyone steps back as it squeezes past. Finish with tea at a cafe overlooking the line. Respect the railway: do not stand on the track, and listen for the horn.

Questions
Before you book
Is the DHR museum at Kurseong open every day?
Opening hours vary and the museum sometimes closes for staff or maintenance. Mornings on weekdays are the safest bet. Entry is cheap, usually ₹20–50. Ask at the station office if the door is shut. Timings change, so check current status before you travel.
Can I take the toy train from Kurseong to Darjeeling?
In recent seasons the railway has run a steam service between Darjeeling and Kurseong and a through service from NJP on some days. Timetables change with season, track repairs and landslides. Check the IRCTC app or Kurseong station a few days before. If it runs, the ride takes about 3 hours uphill.
Is it safe to walk along the railway in the bazaar?
It is a normal part of Kurseong life, but trains and jeeps share narrow space. Walk beside the track rather than on it, keep children close and listen for the horn, which drivers sound constantly. Do not try to board or ride outside moving trains.
