Rafting the Mo Chhu past the dzong
A gentle grade II–III float down the Mo Chhu that ends in sight of Punakha Dzong. Suitable for first-timers and older children in the dry months, with licensed operators and full safety gear.

The usual run starts a few kilometres upstream and covers about 7–10 km of easy rapids and long calm stretches, finishing near the dzong. The Pho Chhu offers a harder run for experienced rafters.
Operators supply rafts, helmets, life jackets and a briefing; a guide steers each boat. The water is cold even in spring, so wear quick-dry clothes and bring a change. In the monsoon months from June to September the rivers run high and fast, and rafting is usually suspended.
The best part is the end: floating slowly round a bend as the white walls of Punakha Dzong appear above the bank, with kingfishers and white-bellied herons along the river in some seasons. Children usually need to be about 10 or older; ask the operator. Combine with an afternoon visit to the dzong.

Questions
Before you book
Is rafting in Punakha safe for beginners?
The standard Mo Chhu run is mostly grade II with a few grade III rapids, and is usually suitable for beginners and older children in the dry season. Go only with licensed operators who provide helmets, life jackets and a trained guide in each raft.
When is the rafting season?
Roughly March to May and October to November, when water levels are moderate. Monsoon flows from June to September are high and runs are usually stopped. Check current status before you travel.
What should I wear for rafting?
Quick-dry clothes, sandals or old trainers with straps, sunscreen and sunglasses with a strap. Bring a towel and a full change of clothes for afterwards. Leave phones in the vehicle or a dry bag.
