The black-necked cranes reach Phobjikha in the last week of October from their breeding grounds on the Tibetan Plateau, and the valley's people treat them as a blessing. Local belief holds that they circle Gangtey Goenpa three times when they arrive. The festival, organised with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature, celebrates their return and raises awareness of conservation.

It is held in the courtyard of Gangtey Goenpa on 11 November in recent calendars, the birthday of the fourth king; some sources give 12 November for earlier years. The highlight is the crane dance, performed by local schoolchildren in black-and-white crane costumes, alongside masked dances, folk songs and plays about protecting the birds. Local stalls sell food and crafts.

Phobjikha has few rooms, so book three to four months ahead. Combine the festival with dawn crane watching at the RSPN viewpoints, keeping well back from the birds. The valley is at about 3,000 m and cold in November, with frosty mornings. Check current status before you travel.

Tips for the day

  • Book Phobjikha rooms by August for 11 November.
  • Watch cranes at dawn the next morning when the crowds have gone.
  • Bring binoculars and keep at least 100 m from feeding birds.
