HPTDC Hotel Castle, Naggar
Stay inside the kath-kuni castle of the old Kullu rajas, traditionally dated to about 1460 and now run by HPTDC. Simple rooms, some with balconies over the Beas valley, a terrace restaurant and the Jagatipatt shrine in the courtyard.
Naggar Castle stands above the village with a long view up the Beas towards the peaks around Rohtang. Built in kath-kuni style, with alternating courses of deodar and stone, it survived the 1905 Kangra earthquake and has been run as a hotel by the state tourism corporation for decades. Half the building holds guest rooms; the courtyard, shrine, gallery and terrace are open to day visitors, so expect some foot traffic during the day.
Rooms are plain rather than plush, with old-fashioned furniture and fireplaces in some, but the experience is the point: you fall asleep in a 15th-century fort and wake to the valley in morning light. The restaurant serves Himachali and north Indian food. The Roerich estate is a short walk uphill. Valley-view rooms sell out first, especially in May, June and during Kullu Dussehra in October.
