Shashur Gompa and the Bhaga view
Climb or drive about 3 km above Keylong to Shashur, a 17th-century gompa looking over the Bhaga valley, where monks perform masked dances at the Tsheshu fair in June.
Shashur Gompa sits on a hillside about 3 km above Keylong, among trees and fields. It dates from the 17th century and belongs to the Drukpa tradition. Its terrace gives the best view of Keylong, the Bhaga river and Kardang across the valley.
Visit in the afternoon, when the light comes round to the town side. In June, Shashur is one of the gompas where Tsheshu masked dances are held, drawing families from across Lahaul. Dates follow the lunar calendar and are set locally.
The climb on foot is steep but short; taxis also go up. Walk around the gompa clockwise, keep voices low and ask before photographing inside.
